Also, There are many flea meds in retail stores, when can I use these for the dog?

I have a 7 1/2 month old Lhasa Apso/Shi Tzu mix puppy. Every week we have a grooming ritual where I clean his ears and rub my fingers over his teeth (just until we can buy cleaner suitable for dogs). Last week I noticed that he had some dry skin on his ear flap and I've kept an eye on it ever since. His ear isn't red, doesn't itch and there isn't any waxy buildup that would signal an ear infection so I'm just wondering if this is something to do with the winter season here or if there are other possibilities. Thanks for all the help in advance!

I have some questions about neutering. I know we will -definitely- be neutering our dog, but I'd like to know a bit more about it.

What age do you recommend? Yes, yes, I know most vets recommend 6 months. I know many do it much earlier. I know it's often recommended for larger dogs to wait 'til, say, a year.
Our dog is a 6 month old English Mastiff. I've read many things -- about how many terrible illness neutering prevents. But also how neutering before a certain age can increase likelihood of bone cancer by a considerable amount. Also how my Mastiff's growth will be affected -- he'll probably be a little more lanky than hefty.

How stressful is being neutered for the dog? Does it take a big toll on his body? How long will it be before he recovers, and how will I have to treat him while he is recovering?
What kind of neutering should I have done? Regular or laser? (Probably regular right?) I've also heard stuff about different ways of stitching them up & how one way's best.

I have a Bichon frise and she had a litter of puppies 3 weeks ago. This morning, she starts crying and staying in weird places for longer periods, like under my desk. Right now, she's with her pups but she shivers and her eyes are squinting. What could be the problem here?
Another thing is that all of her breasts have swelled down except for one, it's like she has a ball in there. Is that normal?
I was thinking that she was cold because of her shivering, but her eyes are squinting... I've never seen her do that except while she's panting after a long walk. But she didn't do any vigorous activities.

I have young children, a smallish yard only a 5' fence, I like to jog (or rather am trying to get back in the habit) We live near a large dog friendly park. We need a medium size dog that is great with all kids, other dogs, preferably one that can be trusted off leash. I can't chase kids as well if I'm always holding the leash. Needs to be able to withstand colder temperatures, will be an outside dog, with indoor visits, full access to garage. I'd prefer a low maintainance hair style dog, I already have more than enough hair between myself and my kids! We are in a subdivision so a breed that isn't a constant howler/barker is a must, I don't want to tick off any neighbors. Any suggestions? We've considered Britany Spaniels, Border Collies, Beagles & other medium hounds are attractive, except for that whole catch a scent and howl issue. Okay, so now everyone either astound me with the perfect dog suggestions or if my dream dog doesn't exist, feel free to break my heart :) thanks

I adopted my new whippet from the shelter about 8 months ago. He is my first dog ever! He is on heart worm medication. He is 23 pounds. I feed him 5 (five) cups of Innova a day but I can still see his ribs, hip bones and spine. Is this just how whippets are supposed to be? I'm tired of people on the street telling me how bony and ugly he is!

She will just be laying down and she will lick herself....in her "private" area.

Why would she do this?

My dog is dying from liver failure. He is 10 years old but that is young for a rat terrier to go. He was poisoned by drinking out of a rain puddle in a drainage ditch that some one poured some kind of freon or anti freeze or something out in the same area. We were going to have him put to sleep today, but I could not do it because he seems to be having a good day today. I know I need to before he starts getting worse. Do I do it before or after Christmas ? If I wait tell after he may be in pain. Right now the vet said he is not in a lot of pain. I do not know what to do. It will be hard. I would love to wait tell after, but I do not want him to suffer.

I lost my Dalmatian to cancer 3 years ago and I've been thinking about a new dog. I like a medium to large dog but a friendly dog, since I have a 20 month old granddaughter. It can be an indoor outdoor dog. I like the golden retrievers and the chocolate labs, which dog is the friendliest (but good gaurd dog) and easiest to train?

I'm not sure if anyone is going to know this in the dog section, but my Carbon Monoxide detector had a reading of 11 on it today when my boyfriend got home. He said the cats were barely moving and so was my dog. I'm extreamly shaken up by the now. My boyfriend took them all outside for fresh air, and the reader says 0 now (the pilot light went out on the gas fire place while it was on, and I didn't realize it). Are my animals going to be okay?.. and is a reading of 11 bad? I know nothing about carbon monoxide, and I don't have the manual for the detector. Thank you.

I'm calling the vet right now as well... but I would still like some veiws on this.
