My dog is dying from liver failure. He is 10 years old but that is young for a rat terrier to go. He was poisoned by drinking out of a rain puddle in a drainage ditch that some one poured some kind of freon or anti freeze or something out in the same area. We were going to have him put to sleep today, but I could not do it because he seems to be having a good day today. I know I need to before he starts getting worse. Do I do it before or after Christmas ? If I wait tell after he may be in pain. Right now the vet said he is not in a lot of pain. I do not know what to do. It will be hard. I would love to wait tell after, but I do not want him to suffer.

First of all, I am sorry you have to make this decision. It is always hard...
But think of the gift you will be giving your pet. One that not many pets get. And that is dying with their loved one by their side.
See if your vet can give you a timeline of when she will be in pain. You might be able to make your choice based on that. You don't want him to be going through unnecessary pain.
I hope this helps in any way.

Sweetie, I am very sorry you are in this position. Last week we had to have our friends dog put to sleep. She was suffering from antifreeze poisoning as well. The bad thing was that we waited too long and she ended up passing right on the vet's table. You are doing the right thing by putting your dog asleep. He is probably not going to make it. If he is looking better that doesn't mean he is going to get better. Put him to sleep before he suffers. It is best to put an animal down before they go through that pain. You wont suffer as much either because you will be content at the fact that he wasn't suffering when he passed.
Again, I am very sorry about your situation. I know exactly how it feels and I know exactly what you are going through.
Good luck to you, and best wishes to your best friend. May he rest in peace.

It is all up to you and your love for your dog. If you want to have that last Christmas with him then just PRAY and HOPE that he can make it these next couple of days. If he does, then I would do what is best after Christmas and go ahead with putting him to sleep. There is no point in making him suffer anymore. Do what you think is the right thing. Maybe he doesn't want to have the pain anymore, and would like to be put down tomorrow? Or just sometime before Christmas.
Wishes and Prayers go out to you!

How about this- give him one more amazing day to be with you, and if he's feeling up to it, take him to the dog park or somewhere else he loves, and let him eat whatever he wants, and just make sure he has the most awesome last day ever, and then take him to the vet and let him go the next day. That way, he'll be going before he feels any pain, but you'll be sure he went out with a bang. I am so sorry for you- I am tearing up reading your question because I don't know what I'll do when my precious Manny's time comes, and I don't hope to find out soon. God bless you and your puppy.

I just had to put my dog down, Amy a big hound dog. The most loyal and loving dog.
Her two back legs did not work.
Amy was very old but that does not help, I still felt very sad.
All you can do is listen to your vet and make sure your dog does not suffer.
You will feel very sad at first after a time you will remember all the good times and keep your dog forever in your memory.

As I understand it, dogs do not show when they are in pain. We recently had to put down our dog, and it was a sad day, but you will get over it. Just don't be selfish and keep the dog around until after Christmas for your own sake, the dog may be suffering the whole time.

Take things day by day. Watch him closely. Don't try to pick a day whether it's before or after Christmas. Your dog deserves to live as long as he is doing OK. Maybe he will survive or at least live comfortable for a couple of months. I know it's hard but try and give him a chance for whatever remaining days he may have with you.

Well if he is dying, then the best thing to do it to have him put to sleep soon. It's only going to hurt him more if you wait. The more your dog suffers, the more you will too. I know it's hard losing a very close animal/friend, I've lost mine over a year ago around this time.

I know how hard it is, but he lived a great 10 years, and it sounds like you were a great owner to him. Let him live one more Chritmas, and then put him down.
If he isn't in a lot of pain right now, then keep him happy. And stay with him on Christmas. But don't keep him so much longer that he'll be in unbearable pain.
I feel so sorry for him. I hope there's a place for him in doggy heaven!

I'm so sorry. It's hard to lose a pet. Your dog will let you know when the right time is. My only suggestion is that if he begins to deteriorate this week not to wait. Many vets will be closed after Friday and you don't want him to suffer. Harder for you, but your priority should be him.
