don't think so.
edit to Robert...the common cold is the one human illness they can not catch.their natural enzymes in their mouth kill the virus/bacteria.

You don't say how old your dog is or if this is a habit that has just starting to occur. If she is an older dog and this habit has started with her getting older then she may have a neurological disorder as a result of a stoke. She may not be able to control these actions and to discipline her for it would be unfair and probably quite confusing to her. If she is a young dog this may be a disorder that is genetic. Do you know who the parents of the dog are or the owners of the dog when she was a pup? Try contacting them if she is a young dog and find out the genetics, it is possible that there was a mother/son or another immediate litter mating. Not always but sometimes if there is a gene in the line of the mother and it is mated with a pup of hers it can cause the gene to become active. It is hard to answer this question without very many specifics. If it is a habit that has recently formed I would seek the advise of a vet. I don't think the dog is in pain but there may be some deeper neurological problems that may cause serious problems later in life. If you catch it now it may save big vet bills later. After reading your addition I would say that the abuse was the cause of her disorder. Try obedience training with a professional if that doesn't fix the problem you might want to seek the advise of a vet to make sure there was no damage neurologically done by the previous owner. Good luck

I suppose it's possible, but I've never heard of it. It's well known, though, that animals can also have "human" illnesses and medical conditions. Some examples: diabetes, cancer, arthritis, the common cold.

I guess they could, if they speak. Last time I checked, my dog won't tell me what his favorite football team is.
