Golden Retrievers and Labs are notoriously known for being super friendly and eager to please in terms of obedience.

Breeds that are super friendly with kids and people are usually not the best guard dogs. Beagles, labs, and Goldens alike are won over too easily. They should do fine as watch dogs, though.
Labs, from experience, learn the quickest. Have a lab who learns a command in two days or less. (sit, shake hands, lie down.)
Pit Bulls and Rotties, if socialized properly at a young age, do very well with kids, and they are extremely loyal and protective. They are not neccessarily stranger friendly, though, so if you want a sociable dog you'll have to consider that.

I have a black lab! They are very affectionate and will take care of your family! They love to cuddle! They're good guard dogs too but will not hurt your family or friends and know when to guard you! But make sure you can walk it at least twice a day or they will get bored! You might want to take it to the lake or park weekly too( or dog daycare!)! The best lab is not a pure bread (they get really big and destructive!), but a mix! I have a Black Lab/Chesapeake Bay and she is friendly and cute! She doesn't shed very much either!
One thing is for sure they always have a lick and a cuddle to share!!

I would suggest going to the AKC website and looking at the breeds you are considering. They have all the information you're looking for. I'm sorry for the loss of your Dalmatian. I have a lab, and he'd be about as good a guard dog as a hamster. He's never met a stranger. However, he's amazing with kids, babies and all people.

How about a shelter dog? You're saving a life, and they're usually inexpensive and include a spay/neuter. As far as breeds go, boxers are excellent with children and i would say are more likely to be protective than a golden or lab. Personally, i think a well bred german shepherd cannot be beat as far as protectiveness, ease of training, and they are amazing with children.

I'm sorry about your loss. It sounds like you love dogs but just cant find the right one. I would recomend a lab. I have a yellow lab who is a great guard dog but is also as nice as they get and wouldn't hurt anyone. So personally Iwould recomend a lab for you to get. To find one you can use petfinder.com or find a local breeder (your old vet might know one). Good luck! Merry Christmas!

Both Goldens and Labs are great with children and easy to train, but are rarely good guard dogs.

Labs are great friendly dogs and absolutely love kids! Golden retrvs are friendly too, but a little more secure and guarded than the labs. Instead of buying you should adopt. I'm a member of ASPCA (www.ASPCA.org) and I know a doggie there would love to be in your home.

Depends entirely on the individual dog - and labs are not known to be good guard dogs, they are usually quite friendly.
Go to the shelters and find one that is known to like children, that's the important thing in your case.

ok person at the bottom, that said labs are more guarded than goldens, LOL, labs are way more intense and independent(not being around you) than goldens,, i know from personal experience, and read websites
