When I adopted my Cocker Spaniel, before they let me pick him up they had him neutered and had his cherry eye surgically removed. Now he has dry eye in his left eye and I've heard that the vets drops are going to be very expensive.

I'm not going to try it, because I'll do my research first - but aren't their eyes similar to ours? Why couldn't I use a really good quality OTC eye drop for him? Is there anything OTC that can be used to help him without an expensive prescription? Or is it the doggie version of Restasis or something...

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, I gave my puppy a bath on the weekend cause she stepped in her own poop (leaving a map of the world on our kitchen floor) and was very smelly. She's only about 12 weeks old. Suddenly the day after, she became kinda strange. She had mild diarrhea, lost her appetite (still ate but only about half the amount), wasn't hyper anymore and drinks more than usual. It might not be because of the bath so I dunno. The next day she basically slept all day, whenever we play she's happy but not as energetic as she used to be. What could be wrong?

My parents promised me that the next pet we got would be mine. I've wanted a little dog for i don't know how long. I spent countless hours reaserching dogs !!!!! They got guinea pigs for all my sibs but me a while back( refrazing the promise) even though we got rid of them. They now say they don't want to tie me down with a dog thinking a seventh grader won't have time and they would't have the money or space. Guess what my mom said she wanted a shorkie 2 weeks ago not spending any time to learn how to care for it. and guess what dad brought home for her? Sure he's adorable alright but shouldn't in all fairness he be MY dog after all my mom has 2 dogs and 3 birds now. Saying at first the bird was mine seeing how i feelt about it. Then days later protesting that he was HERs, i knew from the start she was lieing.
So there you go, why am i so frustrated? Do i have a right to be? How can i get over my jelously and just exept i'm never getting my puppy?

we thought our new lab, who is now 9 months old, was pretty much housetrained. She sleeps in a crate (and has since we got her) and we initially let her out only to go outside to the bathroom or to play (supervised). After she was about 5 months, she never had an accident inside, and we would let her stay in the kitchen, uncrated and unsupervised. In the past couple of weeks, she has regressed, and has recently gone to the bathroom (#2) in the kitchen when unsupervised, even when (as tonight) she had only recently been let outside for about 5 minutes and didn't do anything.

Any suggestions as to what we can do? Should we go back to what we did when we first got her, and only let her out of the crate when we are in the room paying attention to her or when we take her out to go?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, I just got a 2 month year old pup from the shelter. He is a rott/boxer mix. I am pretty sure that the shelter didn't ever take him outside to go potty, because he hasn't had all his shots. So him and his siblings would only go to the bathroom in their kennel and room.
Now, he will only pee on the carpet (and I mostly have wood floors). I tried to stick his nose in it, but he wags his tail. I don't want him to be scared to go to the bathroom in front of me. How can I make him feel comfortable peeing outside? We spend so much time out there, but he will only do it indoors.
Please help!

For those that use the Lupine Collars, where do you find is the best place to buy them. My vet carried them and I have always gotten them there, but he has stopped getting them for now. Where is the place with the best selection?????????

We have a eight month old yellow lab puppy. We are thinking about getting him a friend. We were looking at a one year old rescue lab.

He is understandingly very sad when we leave him at home alone. Our neighbors tell us that he sits on the side of the house and wines/barks for most of day. The other part of the day he has managed to dig up everything in the backyard. <- We expected the digging.

We have spent a small fortune on toys and bones but it doesn't seem to help. We think that our only option is to get him a friend.

Do you think that this will help the situation (wining / barking / digging)? I've heard in some cases that their could be some animosity from him towards the new dog and could make things worse.

Your advice is appreciated. Thank you!

My pitbull is like 13 years old and has arthritis in her hips and back legs. This cold weather is really making it hard for her to walk and I noticed that her legs give out frequently. She has been barking consistantly. I can't afford to take her in to have a bunch of tests to get a prescription. Does anyone know any over the counter/people pain killers that I can give her to help her?

They're both male puppies. One is 8-months-old (male Shih-tzu) and the other is about 6 months (french bulldog). I'm not sure whether they're just playing or actually fighting because sometimes I hear them growling although they don't really bite hard. They have separete crates and separate play pens and they only get together when under supervision. They also have a tendency to be very possesive and selfish--they can't share toys or anything. =S

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

We have an adult Mini-Poodle and are planning to adopt a Standard pup. Both males.

Clearly, the Standard will arrive the bigger one than our older Mini. We fear the Standard will drive his more senior but smaller Mini out of rank, because he's so much bigger. That would be really sad for the Mini who has gone through so much with our family.

We don't want any deadly fights; the Mini can't even reach the bigger pup. We want them to be equal, so we will treat them equally. Is that possible?

just having a debate with my cousin over which dog is bigger, i own a lab retriever and she said she wants a rothweiller dog, she claims a lab is bigger than a rothweiller (sorry i think my spelling for it is wrong), i know they would be fatter dogs but are they taller than a lab? i think that a lab would definately be smaller but she claims a rothweiller would be smaller, anyone want to help me prove my point here so i can wipe it in her face ha ha

You guys are great! I've sort of got the breeding bug now, I think I might start doing some research. I worked at vets' offices and kennels on and off in high school and college and that taught me plenty, but some of you answerers, especially the active breeders, are really teaching me a lot through your answers--so thanks!
