Our yellow lab had the same problem when he was about 2 months old.
Our vet suggested the idea that maybe he was allergic to chicken - supposedly a common food allergy amongst dogs.
So we switched him over to quality lamb and rice food that was low in salt - and it solved the problem!
Poor little guy would start to whimper when he was itching and biting himself - but since switching over (which might I add, was about 9 months ago), there hasn't been a problem since!
We even try to look for dog treats that have no chicken in them - usually we have to purchase a peanut butter or natural treat. However, I should add that even if he does get a treat or two now and then that has chicken in it, the allergy doesn't return - I'm guessing it was the constant daily feeding of the chicken-based food.
Good luck :)

What are you feeding him? A change in diet (if you have not already tired it) would be my first suggestion. Put him on Merrick wilderness blend available at www.doglando.com/barkavenue or Evanger.
My second suggestion would be to take him off absolutely all treats and chews; if he gets all that. Stick to treats made by Merrick.
But most importantly when you are on doglando's site look under green healing for a product called Jake's remedy... this stuff will work wonders, and it is about the only thing I have found to work so great
Also, how frequently do you bathe him and give him a thorough brushing.... I would do this every two weeks and use a coat king (which you will also find on their site) to give him a good brushing.
hope that helps.

I have an ABPT with food allergies. She was scratching all the time and had a rash on her tummy. The vet put her on Eukanuba F/P ( fish and potato) and it worked great. When the company I worked for was sold and I was laid off and forced to retire. The cost of the food was more then I could handle, $70.00 for a 30 lb bag. So I decided to look around. I was lucky on the first try and found lamb and rice worked.
You may have to make a trip to the vet. Good luck with your pup.

he most likely has allergies. dogs skin is like a humans nose, it is one of the first places allergies show up. give him a benadryl tonight, and call your vet for an appointment. your vet mgiht just prescribe Hydroxyzine (atarax) or might need to do bloodwork and make diet changes if it is an ongoing problem.

Try adding Salmon or fish oil to his food. You can buy it at most specialty pet stores, and i even saw it at petco recently. this really helps with itching, be sure to check your dog for fleas and mites first though, and if it is the same spots over and over check the skin underneath to see if he has hot spots

his skin is probably dry if you have your heat on. he might have allergies, but if you want to give him some relief, you can give him benadryl. i give my dog benadryl for her allergies when she is itching alot. you can also try a leave in conditioner.
