It depends upon the size of the dog. A small breed that might live 18 years is about the equivalent of a medium breed at 15, and large breed at 12, and a giant breed at 8 or 9. Okay, according to a new new aging charts that came out at my work, I work in a safe house, and you will maybe see this at a vet office if they are updating their info to their patients it is also based off weight
small breeds are 7 yrs to our 1 year.
Medium is 8 yrs to our 1 year
large and extra large breeds because of their life span being shorter you will want to add 9 and 10 years to our 1 year.
Mostly a vet is able to tell how old a dog is by their teeth unless there is serious neglect then sometimes during a surgery but not always.
Also Note cats age 7 years to our 1 year just some extra info for ya.

Depending on the size of the dog (large vs small) dogs age at different rates with larger dogs aging faster than the smaller breeds.
You can take your dog to the vet to get an idea but that only really works if the dog is young and really all your vet could say is whether the dog is young or older.
The general rule is a dog ages 7years to our 1 year.
