I think wooh is wrong ... there are thousands of homeless dogs out there that would love to have a home irrespective of whether you can take them to a vet or not. Check the city pounds ... all over the country! They just want a home .... they'll take a chance on their personal health.
And no, there is no such thing as affordable vet care - they charge an arm and a leg ... and most of them 'create' a need for more care, if you know what I mean.

As some have said, the SPCA and other organizations often offer reduced rates for those that need it.
Isn't it absolutely infuriating that someone can sit and type on a computer and have internet service...yet have the gall to say they don't have enough money? If I shut my service off and pawned my computer, I could easily get over $200. That should be at least enough to see the vet and make a down payment on any treatments needed.
People need to reevaluate their priorities. Living creatures and their well being comes first. Then you pay your bills and purchase necessities, add to your savings account (which if they had been doing, they would have an "emergency fund" to go to the vet,) and finally, you spend what's left on fun activities and luxury items. Some people have that list seriously backwards.

Yeah....if they didNOT go out for cigs, or did NOT get a pizza a few times a month, and put that $$$ away...they would have the money when it was needed.
I have found there is almost no one that cannot afford something if they REALLY want it!!! Most can sure dig up the $250 for a puppy, but just cannot afford the vet care. takes too big a chunk out of the entertainment budget!!!!!
*******MAN, judging from a lot of the owners on here...the shelter dogs have it WAY better!!!! They get food, water, shelter, medical care, and daily attention. Many OWNED dogs don't have even half of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, personally, am a big believer in people not owning dogs if they cannot afford them. It isn't fair to the dog. Dogs are expensive, and anyone looking into getting one should know that.
There are organizations that will help you in affording a vet bill or two, but these should only be used in an emergancy. The money these organizations give out (those who offer a credit system are an exception) could be going to a better cause.

A person can purchase pet insurance for their pet, which pays for a percentage of the bill, depending on what plan you get. Check it out on the web under pet insurance. I did this, and my dog got kennel cough from the shelter I got him from, and took him to the vet, and since I had the insurance, it didn't cost me anything.

The SPCA here has an assistance program for low income families, and there are several associations like the Spay-Nueter Assistance Program(SNAP) that do it for a lower cost.
I've seen several other places on here mentioned.
