She is a chihuahua, 11 yrs 4 mths old, 2lbs 3oz. When I took her to the vet today to have staples removed (from belly) she snapped at them and they noticed her tounge appears to be burned and maybe missing some of the end. They thought she may have got it stuck to ice or something cold. It was yellowish and smelled horrible. (tonight it appears white) I know for a fact it was not like that this am. Anyway, I am giving her AB from vet but at 2.3 lbs she CANNOT afford to loose weight. This is her normal wt, she is just small. Anyway, she cannot even drink because she cannot stick her tounge in water to lap it. I have been giving her water from a dropper, and milk also. I bought this stuff called Nutri-Cal which she hates. Does anyone have any suggestion, (maybe something I can make) to what I could feed her through dropper to give better nourishment? I thought about Ensure, but said it can cause diarrhea. She can't get the food back due to tounge, & has no front teeth.

It's not that she doesn't want to eat, she really tries. I've held her and cried while she holds the food in her mouth, but literally there is a portion of her tongue gone. She cannot push the food back w/o it. I have 3 different droppers that I'm using. I wasn't sure about baby food because I have read in some places not to give it to dogs. I tried to puree up some chicken mixed with milk to get it thin enough to give in a dropper but it didn't work. I know it's gross but I blended up an egg, milk, and a little sugar and gave that to her and this evening. (She loves ice cream) I've given her overall about a half a cup of H20. I can tell a big difference in her energy. She was so weak. I will get some baby food tomorrow & thought I'd get some gatorade also. I've been trying to give her H20 every half hour or so or if she goes to her bowl. I hope her tongue gets better however if I feed her like this the rest of her life I will do it this is my baby. I've had her since she was 5 wks.

good news? tongues heal very quickly.

bad news? you might have to syringe feed her. get some canned dog food and mix it with water until you have a soup. then syringe feed it to her.

Baby food. Chicken or turkey. You can also mix it with rice cereal.

You may want to consider giving her Pedi-lite (also in baby isle) to help replace electrolytes since she's not drinking much.

I had an older dog with a pancreatic attack. He had to eat a bland diet that was easy to digest and that's what I gave him. I also gave him the pedialite. The vet said both of those were fine. It's not a long term solution but you should be able to do it for a few days. Just make sure it's not too hot and burn her tongue again.

Gerber's bay food, minced meat, chicken minces, take a baby eye dropper, fill it and gently place inside mouth barely inside and squeeze slow, it is mush, so it will go down easy...make sure you do the same with her water, no ice water, luke warm, so wont sting the tongue or mouth part that is injured.....and give her some milk also same way, let sit and get the chill off of it first, so cold wont hurt her little mouth.... she will enjoy it all and will be getting her nutrition at the same time, no I warn you, at first she may spit it back out, keep doing it till she eats for you....she will be fine....

Try BABY FOOD with NO GARLIC.

Baby food is mushy, but still healthy - I recommend the chicken formula.
