My 2 year old Dachshaund sometimes wheezes pretty bad like he can't catch his breath. I got him from the humane society about 3 months ago. He doesnt do a lot but when he does do it its pretty bad. The last time he did it I was walking him outside in the cold and he started wheezing pretty bad. He did it just about the whole walk, which is about a half mile. Ive heard that small dogs tend to have trouble breathing sometimes but im still worried. My question is, is this really normal, what could be wrong with him (e.g. asthma, allergies), and how can I fix it ot help him? Thanks in advance!

I took him to the vet about a month after we got him and he said he was perfectly fine and healthy just need a little weight gain. He started this a day or two after he ate a pen (hes a little devil) but he was eating and running around just fine. I dont think it has to do with the pen becuase that was about 2 months ago. I think im going to call the vet in the morning. The reason I havent yet is because its expensive and he really seems fine seeing as how he really doesnt do it that much. Good advise so far though!

We only have a collar and leash and yes he pulls very hard sometimes. So hard at times hes walks on two legs! He loves to run! Harness sound like a great idea!

this could be several things..but sounds to me like Reverse Sneezing.. which is fairly common in smaller dogs..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UyBrb0Hhpk .. especially if they are excited..

It's basically a case of the trachea swelling when they get excited, making it difficult to get air in.. it's not generally going to be dangerous.. although they do tend to look panicked .. Massaging the throat area may help to ease it..

It never hurts to ask the vet.. if possible get a video or recording of the dog doing it..

If the dog is brachycephalic (squash faced like pug) the wheezing would seem to come from the face and be accompanied by some clear snot occasionally. Is he brachycephalic? This doesn't sound much like a description of that sort of wheezing. Here's a list of things it could be: + backwards sneeze (common but still needs to be checked out as it is often caused by irritation in the throat, like enlarged tonsils) + coughing as a result of heart problems - does it happen more often after exercise of any kind? Not good if so! + kennel cough (which is a hacking kind of cough) + collapsing trachea - can be controlled with meds, doesn't always need surgical correction, depends on the severity. Especially common in Yorkies. If you think this type of cough/hack is not just because the dog has a squashed face, I really would advise having him checked over and discussing this with the vet. Do a Google search on "reverse sneezing" and "collapsed trachea". It could be one of these. Not sure if common in Dachsunds. Either way talk to the vet about possible causes/solutions as both can be scary and uncomfortable. Good luck.

Could be an Upper Respiratory Infection, Kennel Cough, collapsed trachea, almost anything.

Asthma is VERY VERY rare in dogs - much more common in cats.

If anything, I say get your pup to a Vet if he hasn't been already.

If he did it on his walk, was he pulling on the leash a lot? Are you walking him with a collar, or a harness? I know I've had dogs who would pull hard on the collar and end up practically choking themselves - maybe get a harness and see if that helps.

The vet would be the perfect person to ask. You should go there and ask.
