It is just a common name for bronchitis. It has a distinct sound, like a bone is stuck in his throat. Most vets just put them on amoxicillan (clavamox) or cephlahexin and wait for it to pass. It takes a few weeks to pass, and it is not dangerous. Even if the dog is left untreated it passes on it's own.
But the answer is that it is diagnosed simply by sound. The cough sounds unique.

Symptoms of kennel cough include:

runny nose
coughing
choking as though there is a bone in the throat
being sick
weepy eyes

If you suspect kennel cough, you should see the vet. However, call and warn them first that you have a suspected case, because kennel cough is very contagious. They may want you to wait outside the waiting room or to bring your puppy in a carrier so as to restrict the spread of the disease. Your puppy must be kept away from other dogs for 4 full weeks after the symptoms have cleared.

cough cough HAAACK! haha, um take your poor dog to the vet to get checked out and vaccinated. Kennel cough by itself isn't that dangerous but it can easily turn into upper respiratory infection or pneumonia. So vet time, it's much less expensive to treat kennel cough than URI or pneumonia... lol had to spell it again cuz I got it right on the first try!

kennel cough is quiet serious to your dog, if u suspect it, then please just goto the vets! and if u have any other dogs, then u should get them checked out to, as its very contagious, thats why its called kennel cough, u usually see it in dogs who share pounds, and it goes through them like wild fire, my dog had it when she was a pup, we got her through a rescue center, we didnt think she would survive she was in a very bad state, but thankfully, the vet saved her, gave her some much needed antibiotics, and she was fine in a few days.

seriously and im not being rude or smartassish...if u had him confined in a kennel and now hes hacking every few minutes to breathe or clear his throat then yes. there seem to many variables so i would just take him to a vet and bring him home the same day.

...because you've already taken the "dog" to the VET and "they" have treated the "dog" and given the "dog" the proper medication... (that's how you know... anything else, you're just guessing and taking a risk with the "dog")

You don't. You need a vet to diagnose.
