My two seem to be coping very well since my mum died recently, but I have to be careful not to say "Mum" or they'll expect to see her. I'm sure they'll never forget her, but do dogs accept that some people just won't come back again?

Dogs are very resilient, though some can experience illness and stress when their people die or give them away. Though, I have to say I've seen seen more illnesses and depression when another dog in the house dies, then when a person does. Just an observation...

They need the same kind of care people do in this situation, which is another thing that makes them so well suited to be companions to humans. Spend time with them, just relaxing. If you need to cry or mourn, do so, and they will understand and stick with you. They are doing the same thing, and are comforted to see their humans do it too.

They will accept eventually that she won't be back. They probably already know it, but they'll probably always perk up when they hear 'Mum' out of hope or just love.

Yes they do the same as people do. We had a dog at work & there was a office worker who took care of her. When that worker Quit Working there , The dog was upset & sad for about two weeks. She just layed on her bed with such a sad face all day.

it depends on how long the dog has been with them.it takes some dogs a while to get over their owner, especially if it was just the 2 of them for years, but if it was a family dog it would miss the owner for a while but dogs are very good at forgiving that means that if someone, else is good and kind to them they will soon forget their last owner.

When my father passed away 10 years ago, my dog was with my father and I. Actually, she seemed to accept it better than anyone. My dog is not a cuddly dog and at the time NEVER cuddled with me. She wasn't my dog and I was going to college. So I didn't see her much. But the day that dad passed away, it was like she knew that she was suddenly mine. She accepted it and was ready to move one within a couple of weeks.
She is still particularly fond of my uncles, who both look and sound like my dad. I am guessing they also smell similar. So, I think she is "over it" but she misses him just as much as I and the rest of our family does.
Just give them time. Some dogs take longer to get over things, just as some people take longer.

dogs get over it like ppl do. They have to be able to go at their pace though. Dont try to just bring someone else in their life because the dogs will seriously attack the other dog. Anyways yeah they get over it but in time :)

Dogs accept death in time, just as people do. In some ways, they usually understand and cope better than people do.

Not all the time.
Mine went into obvious depression and health failure. She died 5 months later.

I recall a friend once. She had buried her mother a month earlier. She had just returned from her father's funeral. She sat down and her dog lay down beside her, and died.

I am sorry for your lose. In time your dog will accept it, Although She won't be able to express herself like we would. Dogs Do get depressed and mourn much like people do, like with children you must have patience and understanding.

I've seen dogs die right after people they love, people do the same thing. Especially old married people often die within 3 months of each other.
