It was snow storming here like crazy the other nite, so I came in and let my dog out of the garage to go on a pee run and I didnt leash him because it was late and I figured he would like to pee and get in the house. Well, he vanished. The wind was blowing 30 miles per hour. Snow was falling and the dog split. I yelled for 3 hrs until I gave up finding him and went to bed thinking he died in the snow storm. NOT. He headed to the neigbors house and they let him in. He was gone all nite, then when I got up in the AM, they let him into the garage and put a blanket on top of his straw mound. He was sleeping in because when I went out that morning to feed him, he didnt even bother to get up for his food. He was all stretched out in the straw. Should I tell them to bring my dog home the next time, or am I being pathetic? No I am not an abusive dog owner. We live in rural america with outdoor dogs unless the weather is terrible, then they sleep in the house or the barn or the garage

My dog knows to go home when told. He was probably pigging out in their living room with their 11 mo old baby watching animal planet and eating homemade beef jerky.

I have a chihuahua who has gained a couple pounds and now could be considered morbidly obese because my neigbor, Ola May, feeds her every day. Ola loves my dog too much.

Tell them next time let you know at least he's there! And if its too nasty to go retrieve him, You will decide to leave him, or go get him. Its called common curiosity. They should of called you so you didn't worry. I would be mad too! He is a member of your family. Good Luck!

You have the legal right to have the dog removed from neighbor's residence. This is because the dog came uninvited onto your property, attacked & wounded your dog and has also shown aggression towards yourself. Contact your local ASPCA with your complaint. They will go to neighbor's home & discuss solutions to the problem. They can also evaluate the total home environment there, meet the dog & see dog's behavior. Unfortunately, since it is a faulty fence that is allowing the dog to enter your yard, installing new fencing might be the only lasting remedy. This would be incredibly expensive & the expense would be split between your neighbor and yourself. You could also immediately call the police & press charges against your neighbor. This might result in the dog being put down if there have been other complaints or if dog shows aggression towards or even attacks responding police officers. I hate to see an animal punished for the behavior of people. If neighbor trained dog properly & had good home, this would not be happening. Please, try calling ASPCA first. If it is possible financially to install new fence, please consider that as well. Remember, only the fencing that edges neighbor's home would need to be replaced & your neighbor would split cost (because that is what a court would rule). I'm so sorry your dog was hurt & hope he is alright. EDIT: Dawn: New fence would help only to the extent that dog will not be able to get underneath it to your yard. Another solution is to have neighbor put 2nd fence in his yard that is a couple of feet away from chain-link fence. The 2nd fence would take all of the beating & would be installed wholly at neighbor's expense. You will need to call police, make report, go to court & ask judge to rule about 2nd fence.

Okay.. so.. it's cold enough that you don't go out there with the dog.. it's snowing.. and it is your neighbors responsibility to get dressed warmly, trek through the snow carrying (or somehow leashing your loose dog) to bring it home? No. You should have gone over and asked them if your dog came over there... When my dog got loose last winter I was out all night looking. (in the snow) .. first thing I did was ask my neighbors. I did not find him.. because someone had picked him up when he ran in front of their car.. I was not mad at them for taking him home when I got the call in the morning.. even though I was out looking all night.. I was just glad he was safe.
You should be thankful they let the dog in .. if they had ignored it who knows if it would have come home quickly.. Dogs are never 100% predictable.. It could have gotten sick.. eaten something poisonous, been hit by a car... anything.
Now.. it would have been a nice gesture for them to call you.. do they know the number?.. is there an id tag with the number? (Licenses only help when the pound or vector control is open.. which in most suburban areas is not going to be late)
Expecting them to do something that you didn't feel like doing is ridiculous. (going out in the snow)

Gotta love the neighbors!
My mom had a not so friendly chihuahua back before I was born. He developed the habit of needing to go outside every morning at 3 am! She'd get up and let him out, he'd disappear, she'd wait, and wait, he'd come back around 3:30-4am. Had no clue why he had to go out every morning so early! Just figured his schedule was off.
A few weeks later, the next door neighbor comes over, and apologizes. She's started to feel guilty and is worried Mom might be worried that perhaps Pinky isn't eatting as good as he used to. See, she gets up every morning at 3, and fixes her husband bacon and eggs for breakfast before he leaves for work. Pinky has been knocking on her door every morning, and she was letting him in for bacon and eggs! As long as they didn't try to touch him, he was more than happy to come for breakfast!
I'd ask, that if they find him in the future to please, at least call and let you know where he's at, so you can either come retreive him or not worry yourself sick. It's the polite thing to do.

you sound reasonably responsible but a tad pathetic. you have no right to be mad. thankthem for taking care of your pet while at the same time telling them you were worried, and would appreciate a call if such a thing ever happens again. i certainally hope it don't i couldn't sleep if my pet was missing in a storm!

If it was so late, they probably thought they would be waking you if they brought him home, or called you. I wouldn't be mad at them, they were trying to do you a favor. If I were you, I would politely ask them to bring your dog back home, or call you next time he shows up at their place. I've had the same thing happen to me with my dog, and it is frustrating!! At least she is ok!

Yeah, they should have called you, but ultimately the dog is your responsibility. Not their fault. Your the only one who is responsible for your dog, not your neighbors. You shouldnt have let him out to pee without a leash.

How terrible of your caring neighbors that they had the heart to take in your dog in a snowstorm! and how dare they try to make him comfortable in your garage, not to mention they fed him! how cruel!!
Did it ever occur to you that they may have found him when you gave up?
Or that you should be grateful they cared enough and were considerate to care for him for the night, and bring him back to you in the morning?
perhaps next time, they should leave him in the blinding snowstorm, let him freeze to death, and let you find him in the morning, stiff as a board.
be grateful for their kindness! not angry they took your dog in because you were too lazy to leash him! shame on you!

I think this really scared you, and you´re upset because your dog was outside, not because the neighbor let him in.
Give your dog an extra hug today. Some people let their animals outside, and never see them again. I think you are blessed! I once accidentally let my cat outside, and I´ve never seen him since. I loved that cat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe they did it out of kindness, it sounds like their intentions were good. If he is going to run off in the bad weather, you need to leash him. Be mad at him, not them.
