I went to Jackson, MS, and showed a client's Cattle Dog...he won WD/BOW two of the three days he was entered...:-) Only 3 singles to go!

This was the last show weekend of the year...and a VERY successful year for me and my clients: (3) Championships finished, (2) RN Titles, (1) PT Title, (1) HT Title, several dogs pointed, numerous group placings and many bests of breed wins! "And a partridge in a pear tree..." LOL

So, did you show your dog this weekend? Where are you planning on going in January?

Cave: I am a RABID believer that ALL dogs should have titles at BOTH ends...be it a working breed, a herding breed, whathaveyou....
If you aren't breeding for the TOTAL breed standard...i.e., a dog with incorrect movement, strong topline(as in Rotties, my ONLY breed for 15 yrs btw)etc...there is NO WAY that dog could begin to work stock all day without falling apart...
And for the record: I handle MULTIPLE breeds(for a living) and they ALL have a performance title of some sort.

Last weekend I went to a field trial - unfortunately my courser was not at her fittest so we took only 5th. Sadly my breed (whippet) is "split" and some of the type characteristics desired in the breed ring do not contribute to top performance and in fact hinder it.....
I hope to get that dog her ASFA field Champ next year- she needs only points and could finish in one trial but I'm entering mostly small trials with few points available so she's eligible to run in open at the II national which is in my area this year.

This is horrible to hear. I am very sad PETA would yet again do something so heinous. I know with any opposing views, there are radicals. It just makes me cringe when someone feels putting a life at risk is worth making a statement. To answer your question, I think it would be a shame to have the grooming area restricted. There are people who go to shows to talk to owners/handlers about a breed they are interested in. And it is hard to get a handler's attention ringside (obviously) bc they are focused on the action. The grooming area is the best place to have these talks, and actually get to see what goes into a show dog. Hiding this from the public only would help PETA's efforts gain emphasis. I also don't think the organizations will go for all the extra time/money/manpower it would take to have brand new ID cards issued to every competitor. I do think, however, that a basis for security would not be a bad thing. Even someone walking around visably in a security officer uniform will fend off some potential "partycrashers" (insert your own choice word here, lol). Not leaving water out may just have to be a precaution. I know more than one handler who uses locks on their cage after the string of PETA letting out dogs to run rampant through the show a while back. It is sad that a get together of what should be like-minded people, a couple people can wreak havoc and cause terror among them. Most show dogs (there are always exceptions) are very well taken care of dogs, and PETA would be better off working against dog fighters and puppy mills and the amount of euthanisations every year (not saying they don't, just saying this is where the emphasis need lie), not on people trying to BETTER a breed!

Didn't show last weekend... showed the weekend before... had great fun.. put another point on my Sam. My Bernese b*tch won a big open class but the judge felt she should be "more outgoing"... I guess he didn't read the breed standard where it says "aloof".

For the poster who has an issue with showing dogs... I WORK my dogs. Bernese is a Service Dog... Every Sam I've bred has an AHBA herding title as well as a few others. My son used to race my Sams. Dogs BUILT to work with the temperament to do the job. No sense having a dog that works but you cannot tell what breed it is. Seriously, its the breeders who care about BOTH the working and the appearance of the dog that will keep the breed intact.

Whoo hooo!! Congrats! Good job Romeo! I take it you found majors?!! It's always good to get those done and only having to worry about singles! Glad to hear you had a good year....I know you are very dedicated to not only your dogs, but your clients dogs! You believe in them., which shows in the ring and in return works best when you and the dog are a team! Glad to see you got home safe!

oooh someday. And I agree with you, dogs SHOULD be able to do what they're bred to do, but a dog without correct conformation CANT do what it was bred to do :) If I ever buy another doberman, I will look for a breeder that shows not only in conformation but is also active in shutzhund. That would be my ideal dog.

Congratulations! I didn't have any shows in this month. The last one was our specialty in November.

No, because showing breeds in conformation is vain and only services to ruin working breeds. The rally titles and all are all well and good, but working breeds should be WORKED. Form follows function, not the other way around! See the links below.
