poodles don't shed!! but you do have to bath and brush them and take them to the groomers, they say atleast every 4 to 6 weeks!!! and they are smart!!! i have a male toy poodle, that will be 5 months old on Christmas and he has already learned alot!! he is wonderfull!! he knows when he does something wrong, just by me looking at him!!! so i would recommend a poodle!!! toy or mini!!!

Even though dogs that don't shed are great, they are high maintenance when is comes to grooming. Is a 11 year old boy prepared for that? Shih Tzus, poodles, Yorkies, and Malteses are breeds I can think of off the top of my head that don't shed. But please do research about the temperament of these breeds to make sure the dog will fit the life style of the boy and the family.

Check out some books that describe breed characteristics and choose a breed with an easy care coat. Frequent grooming and good nutrition will reduce shedding too. Pick a dog with desired activity needs( lots of exercise or couch potato), size and temperament.

Do some research with your son. Compile a list of dogs that you find suitable as candidates and then let your son do even more research and decide what breed that he likes from that list. If this is to be a dog for him then it is crucial that you let him pick. Coming here is a great first step in narrowing the choices.
Also... don't forget to check the shelter. I know that it can be sad... but his perfect dog could be waiting for him there as well!
Good luck... this could be a ton of fun for the both of you!

Sorry... I shouldn't have assumed that he was your son. But... all of the above should still apply! :)

Poodle or Poodle mix. They do not have fur - its more like human hair. Therefore it will grow like human hair. That's why they have to be taken to the groomer on a regular basis and clipped.
Poodles are available in a variety of sizes - from the very small (tea cup) to the large (Standard Poodle).

Well i have 4 dogs.. I have a lab, a shih tzu, a chihuahua, and a chihuahua/yorkie mix.. And my shih tzu is the least shedding.. Although her hair is long, their hair is more human like, its weird.. And they make awesome family dogs.. Keep in mind that short haired dogs shed also..Good luck

All dogs shed, and every dog will shed different amounts. Even two dogs of the same breed may shed differently.

well hairless dogs of course (ex. Chinese crested or Inca orchid) and short haired dogs. border collies seem to shed a lot and the same with American cocker spaniels. Ibizan hounds don't shed a lot...same with the pharaoh hound

The Poodle--don't laugh--a boy can have a Poodle if he wants to--you don't to get it's hair cut in the traditional "Poodle" do. One of my neighbors has a Standard Poodle-he's black and she doesn't have his hair done in the traditional Poodle do--they are very smart dogs and love to play.
