I've had both, and I think I prefer my pound puppy. What about you?

I prefer purebreds but your question brought back memories of a dog I had as a child. He was the biggest mix of all and came from a pound. So much in him you couldn't tell what he was. Kids would make fun of me because my dog was a mutt. (kids can be cruel) Anyway my brother told me to tell them that he was pure bred. That he was an expensive import! He even gave him what I thought at the time to be a classy name lol! The best dog I ever had in my life was a "Tasmanian Bull Frog Dog" He lived to be 18.

Edit~~~ Thanks for the memory and the tears that came to my eyes!

Ive destroyed my life for "pound" puppies and some are great. However; I would certainly rather not have the "pound" puppies to choose from and have working purebreds to spend my time with instead of housebreaking a different bunch of dogs each week. Or trying to figure out where I can put just two more dogs so they don't die only to find out there was a reason they were in the shelter under the needle.

I have no purebreds of my own they are all mixes via someone elses negligence. I would have prefered to have my choice and not be a bleeding heart for the animals dying in shelters. Pound puppies are no better than purebreds. Any one of them requires training to be the best.

You mean a pound puppy or a puppy from a breeder? Since many pound puppies are purebred....

I have two shelter dogs, but my preference would depend on the dogs purpose in my life. If I wanted a show dog, or a working dog, 100% I would go with a breeder. But for just a pet? Definately the shelter.

All I have ever had are pound pets, or ones that I have rescued from the streets. I gotta say that my pound dogs have always been the most loving, best trained dogs I know. People get so wrapped up in having a purebred that they pay hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars for...if you really care that much about animals, you would save one from the pound instead of supporting people who are breeding animals just to make a buck or two. Plus, what kills me, is the people that pay all this money for a pet and then don't train them properly - jumping all over people, barking, etc...like spoiled little kids...ugh...give me a pet that I've rescued any day of the week.

Well, technically both of mine are pound. One is a pure bred beautiful border collie and the other is a border collie/cavalier king charles spaniel mix. The great thing about mixes is that they are less likely to be ill. In order to get a pure bred, sometimes, you have a lot of inbreeding. With the pound puppies you have a lot less of a chance of that and thus a healthier dog. That doesn't mean that your pound puppy will be healthier, the odds are just better for a healthier dog.

If I'm looking for a dog as a pet, a companion, and/or a playmate for my daughter, I'd go to the pound, where I could find both mutts and purebreds.

If I'm looking for a dog to do a specific job, I would research which breeds are capable of the job, which breed would be compatable with my family and lifestyle, and I'd check breed rescues first before looking into reputable breeders.

I would get a pure breed dog when I want something specific, and a pound puppy if I just want a loving companion.

You can get a pure breed dog at a pound if you look around enough, if you have your heart set on a particular breed for one reason or another. Go to Petfinder.com. Due to allergy issues, we looked and looked and finally found a poodle puppy at a shelter and brought him home. No papers or anything, but he's a beautiful specimen and just what we needed. I would gladly take a mutt if we didn't have such bad allergies.

I've hat a pound puppy and a mutt from an unwanted litter and love them both! My next (10-15 years from now lol) will be a purebred mountain dog (not sure which kind yet).

I love all dogs, and love purebreds and mutts for different reasons :)

i prefer pound puppy
pure breeds are well taken care of by the seller so they never have to worry about not being wanted
pound puppies are the ones that no one wants but when they get real love and affection they are really greatful and it shows plus i can't stand the idea that they are put down
