i have a 4yr old boston terrier who loves everybody. but he hates my girl friend. he hides from her, growls barks and snips at her and we dont know why. she is nicer to him than anyone. if i am home he follows me everywhere except near her. when i hug or kiss her he tries to bite her between the legs. she tries disciplining him with a water bottle and all it does is make him madder. can anyone help please because its hurting our relationship!!! THANK YOU

Someone DUMBLY let my dog eat some cherries with the pits. Should I take my dog to the vet (I'd like to avoid that if possible.) I also read something about inducing vomit. But I'm not too sure.

Can a dog-expert of some sort help me out?

I've reserved a Doberman puppy who is about six weeks old, and I will be picking him up from the breeders in a couple of weeks. I've never owned a puppy before, and am doing all of the research (reading training books, talking to dog owners...). I am planning to enroll my pup in puppy obedience school at the end of the summer after he and I have spent some time together (and he is about 4 months old). During my research, I've definitely come to understand that puppies are BALLS OF ENERGY! I am very willing to accommodate this, but I also understand that there is a difference between an excited puppy (who loves to play) and an overly hyper, frantic puppy (who cannot control himself wherever he is). If he is a "crazy" pup and I don't know how to control it, I'm afraid he'll make our summer very difficult. I'll take him everyday to the park to run and exercise, but is there anything else I can do to help him develop into a semi-obedient (and controllable) pup who listens to me?

Has anyone ever vaccinated their dog at home with the rabies vaccine? I've seen it for sale from the manufacturer.. however, they wont ship to some US states, and there are some states that they can ship to but the "state won't recognize it as a vaccine" and then there are a few states that it's fine for.
Also, I would like to know what some people's experience has been with vaccinating altogether at home. Have you actually saved much money? (please list sites where you purchase them, also) thank you!

I'll admit that this is more of a comment than a question, but I feel it has to be said.
FYI, not everyone who makes a conscious decision to breed their dog is a horrible, horrible person. I know this is a controversial topic, but it just seems like there are some people here who think they're experts on the pet population issue. Well, a lot of the people who breed their dogs DO have reasons other than making money. A lot of them HAVE run the proper tests and done the proper research about whelping, and have lined up prospective buyers BEFORE the breeding is even done. Some of them breed dogs for the joy of it, and only consider healthy, happy dogs for breeding. I'm not saying backyard breeders can't be really bad for dog breeds, but not everyone just goes about willy nilly hooking up chihuahuas with Great Danes.

Now have at me, breeder haters.

He's been lickin ghis "du-claw" (Not sure of the spelling) all day. I've just looked over it and the skin has split and is almost off of it. It's red & swollen. What can I do to make it stop hurting for him?

she tries to bite anyone who messes with her nails or tries to cut her fur. What can I do about it? I don't have enough money to get her to the vet quite yet. I have been saving but I want to make sure I have enough to cover for her shots to be updated and stuff. Is there anything I can do in the meantime??? I tried homeopathic medicine I got from Petco but it does not really work.... I also tried muzzling but she is so freaked out that she moves way too much to get anything accomplished.

I have heard that some breeders are pretty strict about having a huge back yard, not living in an apartment/condo, etc. I live in a decent sized townhouse with an enclosed, but very small back patio area. I have a huge front yard, live a block from a huge park, and live right next to the town trail. There is no shortage of open space to let the dog exercise and play.

i have a small, 13-pound dog. she always licks herself and throws up. I haven't found any hairballs in her barf, but I think thats why she throws up. the throw up is usually clear or white-ish. What's wrong with her?

ps she makes a gagging sound whenever she coughs if that helps

I have a Female Rat Terrier who is approximately a year old. She's hyper as all get out!! Is there any way to calm her down and make it so she doesn't run circles all the time and jump all over the place? I had heard something about puppy ritalin but I wasn't sure. Also, would fixing her help? Thank you for your time!!

I check the animal shelter all the time, but they only have really big dogs. I love big dogs, but I refuse to get a big dog unless I have a big yard. I'm wanting to get a chihuahua or something small like that. Is it morally wrong to get a dog from a breeder? I know it's bad to go to pet stores. I also check the paper too to see if anyone has dogs, like that they can't take care of anymore.

He is 9 years old and has ALWAYS been perfectly fit. We spend a lot of time with him outside, running, swimming, etc. He was neutered in November, and since then has gained 15 pounds. Any tips on food, etc. would be much appreciated.

I have always wondered this, especially reading a lot of the Q & As on here. People always seem to strongly advise against getting puppies in pet stores or from backyard breeders (i am one of those people), but always encourage people to rescue a pet from a local shelter (i also do that).

What i don't understand is the difference. Don't all of the dogs need homes? If its a matter of potential health problems, aren't those just as likely with a rescue dog whose background you don't know either?

I am just curious on the different views here.

she is a black lab, chow mix and is an extreemly old dog (somewere between 18 and 22) and she is drinking 3 bowls(3 cups each.) of water, but only a little more than half a bowl of food. she is still at a healthy weight and has good form. it doesn't seem to be effecting her health. could this be a sign of something later to come?

We have a 4 year old male Lab and a 2 year old female, they have had puppies and I want to get them fixed. My husband said he thought it might change our male. I said no it might just calm him down some but he is not a hipper dog and I think my husband is worried he will not want to play and swim any more. I really want the dogs fixed but I also don't want them to change.

As of yesterday he won't climb stairs or sit down, he's just been laying in the basement. He doesn't limp at all when he walks so I don't think he's hurt his legs and he's eating fine and doesn't appear to be sick. I tried to pick him up, lifting from behind his front legs (he's a black lab) and he whined, could he have a broken rib? Only answer if you have an idea of what might be wrong, don't just tell me to take him to the vet please.
