We have a 4 year old male Lab and a 2 year old female, they have had puppies and I want to get them fixed. My husband said he thought it might change our male. I said no it might just calm him down some but he is not a hipper dog and I think my husband is worried he will not want to play and swim any more. I really want the dogs fixed but I also don't want them to change.

Getting neutered does not change a dog's basic personality!! He'll have much less of a likelihood to develop cancer, he'll probably be more easy going once the hormones are gone, but he will still swim, play and do whatever activities he enjoys now.

The only way neutering changes an animal is to remove sexually-orientated behaviour. Of course it won't stop him wanting to play and swim! Neutering removes sex hormones (not all of them though, there is still some testosterone left because this is produced in the brain too). It doesn't make your dog a different person! It will also save him from prostate and testicular cancer in the future. Tell your husband you are not 'taking away his manhood' if that's what he thinks - typical if he thinks being a man is all about having balls!

Do go ahead and get the dog castrated, that's enough puppies already. Please also get the female spayed - this is very important for a future health. Unspayed females are very prone to mammary tumours in pyometra in later life, both of which can be fatal - pyo can be treated if caught in time, but mammary tumours invariably end up being fatal.

Trust me on this, neutering will not change your dog's personalities!!

The best thing to do for you and your pet is to get them fixed. It will in no way change there personality. They may be calmer to an extent simply because they no longer have sexual frustration, Which makes them hipper and makes them want to run away to find other dogs to help relieve this tension. It will also greatly reduce his chances of getting testicular cancers and such.

It does not change their personality at all. No more than if your husband got a vasectomy. Same principle. It will only change your dog for the better. Neutered males do not stop doing the things they normally do. I have often wondered why people (men) think that way.

i think that once he is fixed he may become more calm but his playfulness should not change. If your husband is really worried get him to ask the vet before the dog is fixed

That is a man for you!!! Having your male dog fixed will not change your dog!!!!
He will still be your manly man's dog!!!!!
He might just calm down some!!!!!

I have had my dogs fixed and they have not changed any. They are healthier and might even live longer from being fixed!!!

What is it with men & getting their male dogs fixed???

You'd think THEY were the ones getting snipped with the way they act sometimes.

He'll mellow out a bit, but it won't do much else to his personality. He'll still want to play and have fun.

since he is older, the only difference will be slightly less aggressive tendencies if he has any. the dog may calm down slightly, but the playing and swimming are part of what he enjoys he will still do it. Ask your vet for reassurance if you are still worried.

It will lessen your dogs territorial instinct, and his mating drive.

These are two of the largest aggressive triggers on dogs, which is why it is advised that all dog owners have their dog fixed.

It will not turn your dog into a couch potato.
