T R,
My dog basically has the same problem. Is the substance foamy, and sometimes red or tan, depending on what your dog ate? Abby (my dog) was taken to the vet and we discovered that her tonsils were causing the problem. We learned that she had large tonsils and anal glands that didn't "deflate." The original purpose of the glands in the wild was to coat feces with a smelly substance to warn other dogs. But now that dogs have become domesticated, the necessary roughage required in their diets to nourish the muscles that squeeze the glands has disappeared. This occurs mostly in small dogs, terriers, and toys.
When she licked herself, her anal glands were full. Bacteria had contaminated it, just as holding a full bladder can cause a bladder disease. This bacteria in turn inflamed her tonsils, so she couldn't get food down. Then her body produced mucus and coated her tonsils. There was a surplus, and if there ever is something in a dog's body that isn't supposed to be there, the only natural way for a dog to get it out is pass it through the front end or the other.
Some solutions:
- Get your dog's anal glands removed and the body will eventually get over the bacterium.(permanent solution)
- Get your dog's anal glands depressed every 3-4 months. (temporary solution)
-Have a vet remove your dog's tonsils. (almost permanent, may not completely get rid of problem)
-Have your vet inject steroids into your dog every 3-4 months. Ask to see what's available, your vet will know. (temporary solution)
This problem is not permanent. If nothing else, add a little grisle to your dog's diet (as recommended by your veterinarian) to get the anal glands working, or use the solutions above. Avoid feeding your dog table scraps and above all, ASK YOUR VET FOR MORE INFORMATION!

Of course the best answer is to take her to the vet and have her examined by a professional rather than relie on answers from strangers. I don't think the licking is related to the vomiting. From your description the dog is only throwing up the foamy mucus that lines the stomach. This can occur because the stomach is empty. If you are only feeding once a day try splitting it up to twice a day or feed veggies for the second feeding, these are not fattening but fill the stomach.

What are you feeding her? My dogs always threw up when they ate onions. (15 years ago) I couldn't figure it out for the life of me why they were puking. I didn't know at that time that onions were toxic and they no longer get anything on the toxic list.
It sounds like there may be something on her skin....did you fertilize your lawn or put down weed killer? When you take her for walks, do neighbors put down weed killer? Try bathing her and see if that helps. If not, I would suggest giving your vet a quick call.

does she throw up immediatly after she licks herself?
it could be a number of things:
area where you may have applied some flea & tick meds? or any type of medicine/ointment?
rubbed up agains some foliage that leaves oils, ie poison oak, that could be left on her fur and maybe causing her to hurl?
soap from a bath that did not come off?
hope these might help a bit.

try to give her a bath. she migh thave something on her skin that makes her sick.
she might have some kind of worm or fugi and that may cause the gagging.
your best bet might be to take her to the vet or at least call and tell them the symptoms.
hope that every thing works out.

take her to the vet.
i have owned dogs all my life and if they are licking theirselves they could have an infection somewhere whether internal or external (skin)......
they could be throwing it up because of trying to lick/heal the area is making them sick feeling.....
take her to the vet and find out if she has any skin conditions....
