I have a Female Rat Terrier who is approximately a year old. She's hyper as all get out!! Is there any way to calm her down and make it so she doesn't run circles all the time and jump all over the place? I had heard something about puppy ritalin but I wasn't sure. Also, would fixing her help? Thank you for your time!!

I'm a dog groomer so believe me, I can relate! Your puppy is definately going through her puppy stage. It takes about 3 years for a dog to calm down, and unfortunately, rat terrier's are naturally hyper and it may take longer. I would not suggest any kind of pill for a dog, it can be dangerous and there are side effects. I would suggest taking her on long walks and running her alot. That'll take some of the energy right out of her! Also, getting her fixed would make a DRASTIC difference. It mellows out dogs ALOT. Plus, it's much healthier to get a female dog fixed. It prevents cancer. Female dogs have issues with their reproductive organs and if they're not fixed, it can possibly shorten their life by a few years or so.

fixing in MOST cases will help. I don't know a lot about that breed. However certain breeds like my BOXER are generally hyper as hell! My dog will act like a puppy for 3-5 years. What i was told and do is make sure they're getting walked min once a day, if you dont have a backyard then try and take him to a dogie park to play with other dogs. I always buy new toys weekly so my dog wont get Bord of his same old ones.
Maybe research the breed and see if it is known to be hyper.

yes fixing is usually helpful.
But it sounds more like she is board seh should be out for a lot of exercise these are very active dogs and will get board if not exercised enough. They should be walked at least 1 hour twice a day or let out to play perferably with you. they are a hunting dogs used originally for hunting fox. you may also want to consider a dog obedience class.
this is why people should really study up on the breed of dog befoer getting as this is normal for one that isn't getting what is needed.
Good Luck

With an open mind, step back and look into the mirror.

Why?

What is -your- energy level?

What role do you play with this dog? (Friend or master?)

Are you an active person? With your dog?

Discipline and exercise are a must for any dog.

Sure, the Terrier breed is an active breed, but so are many other breeds of dog.

Your dog is a reflection of you; how she sees you.

Yes, fixing her would help. but the breed is meant to get plenty of exercise and kill vermin. you can find a few rats, and it'll love to kill them. try letting her loose in your nearest enclosed tennis court.
