my advice to you is to watch the dog whisperer. we just bought a dog and have watched training videos. despite what people here say hitting and yelling at a dog will teach them nothing. you do not give your dog attention when he does any thing that you do not want him to do. some what like a time out. if you can afford a crate for him that is the best method. how ever you can use a baby gate and block him off to an area in your home that does not have any absorbent carpets for them to deficate on. any time your dog does something bad all you do is say no and walk them over to the crate. over time he will get the point. some people mistake the thought that when a dog does something bad that they give you this guilty look like they know they did something wrong which is simply the wrong idea. they are just responding to your reaction. when they see that you are redundent and put him/her away when he does something you disapprove of they will eventually get the hint. when guests come to your house it is recomended that you put him either in that crate or in the secure area in your house. you can let him out in inticles if he is good you can also reward him with a treat. he will get the idea. i know this is a little off subject but many people when they get a new dog they have trouble getting the dog to stop walking them rather then the human walking the dog. on the dog whisperer he recomends that you train him in a secluded spot and walk around with him. rather then choke the dog and yell at him if he starts to pull you and take the lead you stop and then turn arouund. make sure he sees you walking in front of him. when he obeys you reward him. when he does not no treat. a dog needs a 30 minute walk a day minimum. it is good for their body and good for their mental state. dog whisperer can not stress this point enough. having a dog is a huge commitment. if youu are willing to put the time into your dog you will have a very well behaved companion. you might also want to look into your local animal shelter because many of them offer dog training lessons for a small fee. good luck

While standing directly in front of him, pull your knee up to your chest, do not kick, just pull your knee up right when he is jumping on you. It may even knock him over at first , but you will certainly have let him know, in a way he can understand, that it is not right for him to jump. This will take a few repeats before he gets it but he WILL get it and stop the annoying and sometimes painful behavior. Good Luck

There won't be any photos of Purebred Black Labradors that size. If your dog looks like a lab puppy and is just small, look at a photo of a normally sized lab and pretend it's the size of a Beagle. That's probably about as close as you will get.

hey the knee thing and turning around thing works for most dogs but not all. i have a pitbull that does the same thing what works for her is get a spray bottle and spray them with water right between the eyes once they get off praise them like crazy and keep doing if it if he jumps again. also put a leash on them and step on the leash so they only have enough slack to stand so every time they try to jump they wont be able to he'll figure it out after a few times

It may sound harsh, but you "knee" him in the chest EVERY time he does it! And I don't mean gently, either...this is a very effective way to train them to stop jumping, especially big dogs. I had a lab (lost her last year at 11 years old :( it didn't take long at all to train her to stop. It's also a good idea to have your family and friends do it too, so he knows it is unacceptable to everyone.

Just turn away from your dog - turn completely around. Listen and try to watch him - when he has 4 on the floor, hooray! Turn back around right away. If he jumps up again - repeat.
Dogs learn by repetition and it will take a few reps of this before he gets it - be sure that other people do the same when they greet your dog.
Good luck!

It is easier for younger dogs, but the training method is the same. You have to punish unwanted behavior and reward desired behavior. (The same applies to people.) I will leave it to others to tell you what a Lab will consider punishment or reward.

Because you are changing the rules, he will be confused for a while. If you are consistent, he will learn the new rules.

The way I taught my german shepherd to stop jumping on me is to put my knee between him and me when he jumps up and give him a stern "No". Its not going to hurt him, don't slam it into the chest just knee him enough to get his attention. After a half dozen times he should start to understand

Labs just have this kind of personality. It would have been easier to start when the puppy was younger. Scold him for bad behavior when he is doing it. Reward him for good behavior when he doesn't do it. I don't really know what else to tell you. Good luck!

Grab onto his muzzle look him straight in the eyes and say in a loud voice DOWN !! NO!!! You have to keep doing this over and over every time you see him about to jump up !!
