The purebred dogs of today were created by selectively breeding mixes of other breeds. The Golden Retriver, for example, was initally created by mixed a yellow mutt with a now-obsolete water spaniel. What are the origins of your purebreed of choice?

Her name is Sassy she's a miniature poodle who in her "heyday" weighed abt 13lbs. Now she weighs just under 10. She was spayed years agp. I've taken her to the Vet who tested her for many things incl. worms. I've tried every dogfood I can think of. I don't know what else to do! Her teeth appear to be OK, but could use cleaning. She's an inside pampered pooch. I love her very much, & I need advice. Any ideas?

I got a lot of answers saying he is eather hybrid or shepard mix. I want to know hot to tell those apart... He may be shepard but I think shpards are more slender... But then again he may be fat. How do I tell if a hairy dog is fat? The hair confuses me.

And for those of you saying I WANT him to be wolf are very wrong, I just want to know what he is. And of coarse I'm happy to have him (Aside from destroying everything in his path) but I'm a very curious person so if you think I want to him to be wolf please keep it to yourselves.

So the questions here are:

How to determine if my dog is a hybrid or Shepard?

How to determine if a very haiy dog is overweught?

Thank you for your tolerance.

I just got a 9 week old female Great Pyrenees. I had an adult one for a few weeks about 25 years ago, but it ran off after someone gave it to me. It seems like he was quiet and took a beating real well from my 3 year old. Tell me if you've owned one, and what you think about them personality wise etc.

I brush my dog's teeth at least 3 times a week, and when I brush his teeth his gums bleed enough so I can see it on the brush... I don't think it is gingivitis because that is caused by poor dental care and I try to keep my dog's teeth in top condition. Why do you think this is happening?

I have seen a few questions or answers on here suggesting that spaying or neutering is not beneficial? Why would people think that at all when it is well proven that spaying and neutering is beneficial especially if the animals are not going to be used for breeding! Just wondering

I forgot some details and more pictures.
His front legs do come straight down from his body, and he has howled before. And sometimes when he barks it sounds like a howl mixed in... And he looks like he's howling.

We have a puggle and when we let her out (crate training) she thinks it time to sprint through the house. We have a section off area in the back of the house for her to play and also have a area outside for her to play, but when we let her in the rest of the house she constantly trying to sprint through the house.

We have told her 'no' and we have made her take times out. We have put her on a leash, but nothing is working. She will not calm down, when let into the rest of the house.

By the way, she is a pup and she is 7 months old. Please help, we want to let her have more freedom in the house, but the running thing has to stop.

Another question about adopting a doggie. I am going next weekend to the shelter and hope to find our newest family member there (I found a few that i would like to meet on petfinder.com). My question is would it be ok to go there first and get the dog and then take him/her to petsmart with us to get a collar, leash, dog food and toys so we know we are getting the right kind for the right breed since we don't know yet the size, breed or age of the dog we are getting?

I just posted a sarcastic question, and removed it before it offended too many people. So, I will ask the question straight out. Why is it that many people don't do any real research before breeding? You hear of people worried when their ***** and stud get stuck together, and they don't know what to do. Not knowing that this was pretty well normal. Or, the woman earlier who had two dogs, one mutt and one pitt, that both had litters and the one dog was eating her pups. But, instead of calling the vet, she came here! Why do these people not learn? Why do they not want to call the vets? The question about the staph infection that they want home treatments, what are they thinking???

We have decided to go to the local shelter next weekend and the pound and see if we can find our new family member there. I seen a few on petfinder.com that I would like to meet and see if any of them are a good fit for us. I have located a vet already that was recommended by a rescue group. Now I am wondering about pet insurance. I know some say it is a good idea, but which one is the best. I am located in Ohio.

My dog was at a shelter that said he is a pure bred Alaskan Malamute... But he doesn't really look like one.

Here are some links:

He's has more hair and he's much more bulky than Alaskan Malamutes I've seen...

He's also has big feet, like a wolf.
Please help me!?

I was just wondering if anyone else experienced this sudden onset of symptoms? he will walk and then all of a sudden - bag legs wobble and he is unable to continue - and stops. He does not seem to be in any pain and is eating and everything as normal, aside from this symptom. I will be bringing him to the Vet on monday, but just wondered if anyone had anything like this happen ? I do not believe it to be arthritis as it was SUDDEN, and he is not very old. He's always been very healthy and was just at the vet for a yearly check up last week, all was normal then too.
