Life expectancy for giant breed dogs is much younger than smaller dogs. It is from 8-10 years for a saint. A lady i work with has 3 st. bernards. Her oldest one is 10, and she is having a very hard time. But she knows that life excpantancy is not very old, but she loves st. bernards so much, that she continues to rescue them. Her dogs are SOO sweet. Some of the most well behaved dogs i have ever met. Also some of the BIGGEST dogs i have ever met. Her male Bob is 185 pounds!!!

8-12 years is right on the money. However, the last few years are not pretty, and larger dogs often have health or mobility issues. Hip problems, knee problems--they are a big commitment, both emotionally and financially. It's best to anticipate a few (often hefty) vet bills toward the end of their lives.
