I'm pretty sure that dogs circle around before they go to sleep because they are checking whether the land is comfortable to sleep on or not.

Because in the wild the dog will feel if the spot is one that is desirable but circling it before laying down. If the spot is suitable then they will sleep, if not they will find another space of ground and lay there.

It's probably an innate thing. It gives them a 360 degree look at the surroundings to make sure it's a safe place to sleep and, they walk in circles to break down, what was once, tall grass so that it will not poke or prode them.

Lots of animals make circles before they sleep, not just dogs.
Ferrets do it too.

It's from when they were wild and slept in long grass, they turn round and round as if they are tamping down the grass to get comfy. My two sleep on bean bags and do it all the time they're quite funny sometimes.

The dog is just looking for the best spot to lie down in.

It is an instictive thing, relating to when they circled to make sure there were no sticks or stones in their bed, and to make a nice nest in grass..
Many wild creatures do it too..as well as horses, and goats.
