In a human you would be describing "dry heaves". Sounds like he is trying to throw up but nothing is coming up. How long since he really ate? Need to get liquids in him so doesn't dehydrate. See if your mom has some chicken or beef broth and warm that up for him. Keep him warm and dry of course. Need you to check his gums and see if they are real pale, almost white. They should be bright pink.

Has he been kept up on shots. Is he on heartworm prevention or been on? How long has this been going on? Lay your ear on chest and listen for any wheezing sounds in lungs. Check the stomach to see if swollen and real firm. Is he able to do potty, both? Has been exposed to strays, neighbors dogs lately?

Think on these and post more info please.

TAKE HIM TO THE VET NOW!!!!!

It could be extremely serious, especially if he is a large breed, which are prone to a condition called bloat (gastric dilatation volvulus, where the stomach fills with gas and then rotates) that is often deadly if treatment is not received immediately.

The website listed says:
"The most obvious signs are abdominal distention (swollen belly) and nonproductive vomiting (animal appears to be vomiting, but nothing comes up) and retching. Other signs include restlessness, abdominal pain, and rapid shallow breathing. Profuse salivation may indicate severe pain. If the dog's condition continues to deteriorate, especially if volvulus has occurred, the dog may go into shock and become pale, have a weak pulse, a rapid heart rate, and eventually collapse. A dog with gastric dilatation without volvulus can show all of these signs, but the more severe signs are likely to occur in dogs with both dilatation and volvulus."

I have had a dog that developed bloat and he almost died from it. The vet said that if I hadn't gotten him to the clinic when I did he would of died.

Could be that he does have something caught in his throat. If you have a animal hospital call them. They will most likely let you talk with the vet. and then they can tell you if you need to bring him in now or if it can wait until the morning. Do call now! If it is a poisoning and you wait, the longer you wait the more likely for kidney and liver damage!

Depending on the breed, unproductive attempts to vomit can be a sign of GDV or bloat - an emergency and fatal if not seen. Then again, if he's just hacking or coughing it could be anything from kennal cough to heart disease. Your clinical signs aren't many. I would have him see by a veterinarian before Monday.

FIND AN EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL ASAP! He could have something lodged in his throat, & possibly choke slowly to death.

his stomach may be agrravating(that is probably why he isn't eating) him where it is making him have gag reflexes(which he drinks to try to get all the stuff out)...
