Another question about adopting a doggie. I am going next weekend to the shelter and hope to find our newest family member there (I found a few that i would like to meet on petfinder.com). My question is would it be ok to go there first and get the dog and then take him/her to petsmart with us to get a collar, leash, dog food and toys so we know we are getting the right kind for the right breed since we don't know yet the size, breed or age of the dog we are getting?

I wouldn't take the dog to petsmart with you. She will be nervous and you do not know how she will react in a strange setting and around the other dogs. I know there are other dogs in the shelter but still they are seperated. I would get the dog, take it home and then go and buy your supplies for it. Thanks for adopting a dog and saving a life.

This is a fine thought, but because it would be harder to take the dog into the store without a leash or collar then I would reccomend getting a retractable leash, and an adjustable collar beforehand. Then you can get a set that is nicer if you desire so. Also you should probably buy a small bag of puppy sized kibble and then a compact bowl for the car ride. Because any dog can eat puppy sized.
Some Additional adoption Info:
You should probably look up the sort of breed you would like and research it before going to the shelter. Also go inside the kennel of the dog before you choose it and pet it and open it's mouth and test it's legs and hips to check for disease and hurt body parts. Make sure to be careful. Also be careful to bring around 200 dollars cash and some proof of your house ownership and other stuff. So enjoy your new family member!

Usually a shelter will give you a little loop style nylon combo leash collar thing and it would be fine to take you dog with that from the shelter to a PetSmart or a PetCo as they both allow people to bring their animals shopping with them. They also have machines where you can engrave your own tags with contact info. on your dog. Ours have our dogs name, two phone numbers of ours and a Vet's number.
Congrats on your upcoming adoption.

That sounds like a perfect plan unless you can manage to get to a petsmart where a humane society is having a pet adoption an then that way you can do like a one stop shopping trip that is how I got my little dog Schmitty.

It makes sense to buy the stuff you need after you get your dog - as you said, you just don't know what size etc you'll get :D

Yes, adopt the dog first. (S)He has a personality you know, so (s)he can help you pick things out. Toys, toys, toys and cookies.

I think that is perfectly fine. That is what i would do, find out which dog i end up adopting, and taking him with me so i know what i need for him. I'm glad you hear you are adopting! That is so exciting! I hope you find your perfect dog!!!
