Great pyrennes are wonderful dogs. They are very protective animals and very sweet and loving. Very smart. The adult that you had and he ran off, was probably looking for some sheep or goats to take care of. That is their nature. If you live in the country your pup may do the same thing. I got a 5 week old Pyre a few years ago after the mother had been killed. We had goats and got her to protect them. That 5 week old pup had the best instincts of any Great Pyrennes dog I have ever owned. From the time we got her, she knew exactly what her job was and she did it. Our neighbors also had goats and she would go back and forth between our place and theirs so she could watch over all of them. She was a wonderful dog. We have owned several over the years. She will accept you and your family as her "herd" and be protective of you, but like I said, if you live in the country where there are goats or sheep, she may run off and find a herd to protect.

i'm a pet groomer and have worked with these guys a lot and can say the majority of them seem very laid back, patient and eager to please. they seem to be a bit on the lazy side but thats not always a bad thing. so far as i can tell they are a pretty good breed for children. one of my staff has a g.p. puppy and the only complaints i've heard from her is: she's vocal(aren't most puppies?) and every time she gives her a bath the first thing she does is to find the messiest spot she can and plants herself there

My neighbor had one when I was a child. It was definately calm. Except for the one day when a tiny yappy dog from down the street was being obnoxious. This big dog just stared at this little yappy dog, then put one of his big paws on its back, and pushed it into the snow. It was hilarious!

My grandmother owns one, and she is a pretty good dog. She is very sweet, but she is still kind of hyper (she is about 9 months old). Just be ready to do a lot of brushing.

I have not owned one, but i work at a vet clinic, and we have seen a few. All of them have been very calm sturdy dogs. I have never seen any behavioral problems. i find them to be very nice, and very beautiful dogs.

never owned one myself but have known those who have. They are very gentle and patient. They also need plenty mof exercise to keep their back and hip muscles strong as the tend to break down in the hips early as most large dogs do.Just give them attention and love them.

WHITE...HAIR...EVERYWHERE!!!!
Also have a tendency to roam far and wide if they ever get loose. Like any dog, they can be trained and conditioned to be good members of society, or allowed to run the house and become problem dogs.
