Cats - October 2006

I have 4 happy, healthy, well-behaved cats. My vet references are exemplary, and I have successful adoption records at other shelters. This one would not let me have a kitten because I allow my cats to come in and go out as they please. In fact they were rather rude to me. I can't believe they would rather keep a kitten locked up in a cage than let it go to good loving home simply because the kitten would have the freedom to be cat there. I did adopt somewhere else but It's just killing me because I know I'm a great kitty mommy. Should I write them a letter or what should I do? I don't want to seem like a deranged lunatic but it did hurt my feelings. Also, I live in the country and have never had problems with my other kitties going outside.

My kitten is about 3 months old, and every time i sit, or laydown, and she can get up on my shoulder or my chest, she starts purring loudly and rubs her face in my hair. Sometimes it sounds like she's sucking on it or licking it. She also kneads my shoulder occasionally too. Is this normal?? It's cute, but really, it's really hard to sleep with a cat on your head. My fiance finds this hilarious. I even just henna'd my hair and it smells really bad, but she stil, does it. Why does she do this??

My grandson has just started having minor breathing problems when he is at my house around cats and no where else. He has been around them since he was born?? What might be going on here?? Nothing has changed in my house. so I guess it has to be my cats.

I was thinking about getting a dog, but maybe a cat is better suited. I am a stay at home mom with a 16 month old daughter. I live in a duplex with a yard. Of course cat will be inside. I will be going back to work sometime maybe part time maybe full time. I am nervous about leaving a dog alone for long periods. I have been looking at cats at the local shelter. I had cats when I lived at home as a teenager I am a bit concerned about one with my little girl. I would most likely get an adult or younger cat not a kitten. My husband is afraid a cat will tear up carpet, couches and spray. It will be spayed or nutered though. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

My female cat is four years old and is timid during the day and very affectionate during the evenings. Whenever you pass her she freezes and looks frightened and she evens runs away. We have never trodden on her and she is spoilt to bits by the whole family.
I am beginning to wonder whether it is the laminate flooring that makes our footsteps echo or is it just her personality?

Poppy loves to eat string. Yarn, spaghetti straps, drawstring pants, you name it. It just occurred to me - could this be a sign of a fiber deficiency? Her stool has always been on the loose side, so I'm investigating fiber supplements. She doesn't eat any other fibers, just string.

Some additional details: She's 2 years old and weighs 25 pounds (I know, I know, bad Mommy). Her stool has been checked and is clear. She's probably a Maine Coone or a Norwegian Forest Cat. I got her at 3 mos., and her stool was always like this. I used to feed dry Purina, but have switched her over to moist. I'm giving her the better brands (after careful reading of the ingredients), although she's picky and only seems to like Natural Balance Venison or Turkey. I was hoping the diet change would make this better. But now it's just dark and loose instead of light brown and loose (sigh). I'm giving her about 6 oz per day.

I cannot understand why anyone would want to hurt or even kill companion animals such as cats..or engage in dogfighting, hog-dog fighting, or cockfighting..people who are deliberately cruel to animals totally disgust me. Consider what some of them turn out to be...rapists, child molesters, serial killers...What's so funny about harming an INNOCENT dog or cat?

I got this new kitten on Saturday, It is 5 months old, I adopted from one of those foster home shelters at my local Petsmart. The kitten will not quit meowing. I have a 2 year old male at home also so I have been isolating the new kitten as I was told to slowing introduce them. The kitten is in a room with food, water, literbox, radio, night light, toys, bed, blankets, scratching post. It meows 24/7, all night long while I am trying to sleep, I can not let it sleep with me bc my allergies tend to act up more if he is all over me and in my face. My other cat sleeps in his own room. The kitten even when you are in the same room meows and wants to be constantly petted or held. I work 9 hours a day, and I need my sleep, any suggestions? Was it a bad ideal to get kitten, does a 5 month old kitten required that much attention? I try to give it some when I can but its hard, and I thought cat were suppose to be more indepent and not require it like dogs do? Thank you

The kitten, Faith, is now 6 months old or so. She seems to have gotten bigger recently, she may be pregnant, we just don't know yet. Additionally, the second baby kitten went missing weeks ago, around the same time Momma started this hissing thing with Faith. Faith keeps trying to approach Momma, but Momma won't let her near and hisses her kitten away. It's bizarr. I don't know if this is normal behavior, I've never owned cats before these ones.

My cat loves me so much, like, he'll be really angry at me cause i put him on a leash or that i started picking with him, then, when i go to sleep, his in my bed and he just takes a nap on my back-until i turn over, then, he'll nap on my side-until i roll over and somach.....and when i go to the bathroom, the door, it'll close, but sometimes the little thing square thing that goes in the hole is stuck, and i'll only be in there for like 10 seconds and he'll push the door open with his paw, and finally-its annoying but cute, he'll follow me everywhere in the house and he's a house cat so if i take him and side he'll just follow me, but if he was following me around the house and gets distracted and i turn aroung the corner, i've noticed he'll start to meow, but its really deep? i know he loves me, but can you describe it a little better?

at night when i go to sleep i shut the door to my bedroom mainly because i am allergic to cats and because they think that my bedroom after dark is some kind of olympic hell raisin contest arena. so i lock them out of my room. but when they want to come in they just claw at the door and i mean claw like there's a hole in the carpet and bad claw marks on the door. what can i do to keep them from keeping me up all night?
