Cats have very unique tongues that have important functions. A cats tongue can cup water when drinking, so that they can drink and breath at the same time. A cats tounge has a rough surface that allows them to bathe themselves and work out rough patches in there hair. Cats are very unique in make up.... Cool huh? Have a great day.

Certainly the "wire brush" phenomenon of a cat's tongue helps in grooming and keeping the coat in healthy condition. Actually the most important reason for it is that cats are carnivores and the tongue strips hair from a prey carcass and takes the meat off the bone.

the scratchiness on a cats tongue are like tiny bristles on a brush. Since cats are very clean creatures and love to groom themselves, their tongues act as a brush.
Also, did you know that cats have 2 sets of tastes buds? As humans we only have 1, imagine how great everything tastes to a cat.

A cats tongue is two-sided, a soft side for eating and a rough side for cleaning themselves. Also, when they drink water, their tongue curls backwards to drink. The top side is the rough side that they use to clean themselves. This is so they can get at any loose fur and pull it aways. Unfortunately, they swallow it which can cause fur balls in their stomach. So this is why you should give them a hairball treatment of some kind, either from your vet or at your local pet store. Hairballs can cause alot of digestive problems and can make them throwup.

They have hook-like cups on their tongues to be able to lap water while keeping their heads up to run from danger... They feel like sandpaper. It also aids in the cleaning of their thick fur

To clean themselves with! They bathe pretty much constantly so the rough tongue gets dirt and extra fur out! Thats why they get hairballs sometimes...

The hair like thing on there tongue are actually taste buds. They have these longer ones because it makes it easier for them to groom themselves and it is easier to lap up water.
