My female cat is four years old and is timid during the day and very affectionate during the evenings. Whenever you pass her she freezes and looks frightened and she evens runs away. We have never trodden on her and she is spoilt to bits by the whole family.
I am beginning to wonder whether it is the laminate flooring that makes our footsteps echo or is it just her personality?

I'm inclined to agree that it's probably her personality. Has she always been like this? If it's more of a sudden change within the last year or two (or less), I'd suspect something happened to her....or something in the house changed that traumatized her....or maybe there's something mentally amiss. Animals can succumb to any number of anxiety problems just like humans can.

She may just be a high strung cat. You could try one of the various calming rememdies.....stress isn't good for us, I doubt it's good for them, either.

Since it sounds like she's only skittish on the floor, make sure she has access to plenty of high places (my cat loves desks, the bookcases, stacked boxes, etc.) Anything she can jump on to feel more "on top of the world" might help her relax a little....and it might help her cope better when she IS on the floor. I'm sure she'd love a nice, tall cat tree:)

Some cats are a bit skittish. All of my felines are (mostly) affectionate, but they have their little personalities. However, they know that during the day they had better stay out from under my feet because I'm going to be going somewhere.

Is there a chance that someone might have had an accident with her? Though I think after 4 years, it's more likely to be her personality.

I have a female cat who is the same way. I have had her for 4 to 5 years. I found her when a neighbor abandoned her. She has never been hurt by a human . We call her scaredy cat. I think it is her personality. At night she comes up and sits with us. But only at night.

she could be a 'feral cat'. They are very smart but will always be a little scared since they and there ancestors had to survive outside for so long. They are very sensitive to any kind of noise and movements. Hope this helps.

I have a cat he is 1 year old and he still does not let me touch him and also looks afraid of me and I don't know why he is like that. My other cats love me. But I'm sure he loves me also it's just part of his personallity

I notice with my cat that if I wear black shoes for some reason she doesn't like it. I would say it's either the flooring or the shoe color that freaks her out.
If you hold her a lot and she's comfortable with that, it has to be one or the other.
