Scoop Away Multi cat is the best I've used.

To be honest, as long as you use the scoopable litter, and tend the litterboxes at least once a day, you don't need a multi-cat formula. I have multi-cats, and I just use the Tidy Cats scoopable and have no problems. If the multi-cat happens to be on sale that week, then I buy the multi-cat. As far as I can see, the only difference between Tidy Cats plain and Tidy Cats Multi is the fragrance they put in it. I just don't like the clay litters. They are more expensive to use in the long run, make a lot of dust, and don't control odor as well.

Having used a few different litters, I can give you my tips....whether these are inexpensive enough for you, I have no idea.

Tidy Cats Small Spaces - very good at keeping the smell down, but still crumbles like the majority of clay litters I've tried.

Swheat Scoop - a wheat based litter.....keeps the smell down, but smells horrendous while you're cleaning it (just imagine a cat pissing on a loaf of bread), and doesn't soak the urine up very well.

Arm & Hammer - not so good with the smell, and the crumbling was unacceptable....it was so poor at clumping that it left the entire box kind of "muddy".

Tidy Cats Crystals Blend - crystals mixed with clay litter. Supposed to have a new, patented "no crumble" action....still crumbled.

Tidy Cats Crystals - silica crystals....I love it and am sticking with it.

I dont recommend getting really cheap litter, it can be harmful to you and your cat.

I use Fresh Step cat litter, its not that expensive but it is highly recommended vets. They have different kinds of litter to meet your every need. Small Spaces is great for controlling odor and clumps very well, they also have crystal and clay scoopable litter that controls smell on contact.

I never got into the clumping litter, but if you buy BAKING SODA and put some in the box before you dump in the litter, then mix some more in on the top..it really helps with odors! Be sure to look for the HUGE box they sell at the store, it's like a dollar!

it's not inexpensive, but you don't smell anything at all.
Feline Pine Cat Litter by Nature's Earth Products.
It's made from pellets of pine wood, 100% natural and no dust. About $10 a bag

Arm & hammer works really well but it has a scent and some cats might not use it...the local shelter uses a bulk litter from Petco...I believe it's called "Pet Gold"...You refill your bucket and it's pretty cheap, and works well...I'm switching to it as soon as my A & H runs out.

Scoop-Away

Bought at Sam's or Costco, you get enough to last you a whole month, unless you have allot of cats. And it only costs around $11.00 dollars (US) for about 33 to 40 pounds, depending on what they have in stock.

Hope this helps.

I use a generic brand (Pathmark, Shoptrite). I have three cats so I use the one for multiple cat household. It's relatively inexpensive (about $5.99 for a 14 lb container). Sometimes the larger container is on sale for that price.

I buy the cheapest brand at Family Dollar; it cost a dollar. It works just as well as any of the others and because its cheap i can afford to change the litter everyday
