its possible. I have had cats all my life, so I was quite surprised when I had a bad reaction to them. My aunt is a vet in MN, when I went to visit her I went to work with her. She work at the second largest humane society in the US, so there were plenty of fluffies for me to play with.
I spent maybe an hour with all the different cats and kittens and soon found my face swelling, itching, and it was hard to breathe. My aunt said that it was more than likely the cat hair and dander.
I suggest giving your son some claritin, they have kid claritin, this will help control his allergies. Also, be sure to brush your cats well and you can bathe them to get rid of access fur. There are also types of cat food that can help with the shedding of fur.
I have not had an allergic reaction since that day.

People, especially kids, can develop allergies over time, my aunt wasn't allergic to cats until she was 30. If you want to be sure it IS the cats, there is an allergy test doctors can give, commonly called a scratch test, to see what the child is allergic too, if you have plants in the house it could also be those.

Unfortunately yes. Allergies develop over time, especially in children. But don't get rid of your cats. There are plenty of medications that your grandson can take before he comes to your house so that the cats won't bother him. Generally the allergy is due to the saliva on the cats, so you could bathe them in allergy reduction shampoo that you can get at PetSmart. For the meds try the pedatricians or allergy specialist.

It could be sooooo many things.
Try changing your filters in your ac unit.
Kids develop allergies. They start to show at a young age, not necessarily as a baby. Baby's have super immune systems.
Consider taking him to the doc and having a test done. It could be dust mites he's allergic to. He could have asthma. This is really a good reason to go to the doc. I don't go to the doc unless I have to. But with breathing problems, it's not necessarily the cats. Could be grass, polyester, your detergent...and on and on. Anything he's been around forever. Not just cats.

Allergies can develop at any time. You could be around a dog for 12 years and then be allergic to it. If you do have allergies you will need some medication. Go see a doctor.

Allergies can develop at any time, even if you have been exposed to the allergen your whole life. Talk to your doctor to make sure that it is indeed the cats, but yes, it very well could be that your grandson is allergic to them now.

Yes you can. Allergies can come and go. My cousin was allergic to cats but the allergies went away after her family had the cat for awhile. After she moved out and would come back and be around the cat, they would come back.

He could have developed an allergy although usually children that are around animals (especially from birth) are NOT as likely to develop allergies from them.
He could also have developed an allergy to something else so I wouldn't assume it is the cats.
He would have to have an allergy test to confirm that it was in fact the cats.
