What kind of food should dogs over a year eat? dry or canned? I have a golden retriever, he's about a year and 3 mos. my neighbor recommended that I eliminate canned food from his diet, he normally eats half a can of Pedigree choice cuts in the morning, mixed with 3 cups of dry pedigree complete nutrition, and the other half in the afternoon, and a milkbone in the evening. Is this a good healthy diet for my dog? He weighs about 65 lbs.

Thank you.

We are moving to Dallas to a 4 bedroom one story house with an average size backyard. We are planning to get our dog just before we move, which is the end of december. We are willing to get up to a medium sized dog with minor shedding. Here are the breeds my mom decided NOT to get;

1. Dauchsund
2. Beagle
3. Chihuahua
4. Any large dog

So do you guys have any suggestions?

He's 6 months old now, he doesn't bite viciously, only in a playful matter, and it doesn't hurt. However, he does this often, especially when I come home from a day's work, or even when my boyfriend and I take him on a walk. He'll sometimes get into a frenzy and jump up at us with his, what seems like mouthing. Also, he humps my boyfriend almost constantly when outside, so he'll hold our dog to the ground saying "No!" sternly every time. It's gotten to the point where my boyfriend now swats him gently, but sternly enough on his nose. What can I do? Why does he hump my boyfriend [mind you not me, only him]? And lastly, why is he this hyper? We do run him by the way, he gets his excercise....

For example:
1) When I was at uni., a new student wanted a room in our communal house. Before he moved in, his Siamese cat moved in first, even though the cat hadn't been shown the house before.
2) I was moving house myself, 7 years ago. Not far. I led most of my cats to the new place before I moved in, but Persian Jenda never came. Then once the t.v. had been moved, I was watching a video alone and heard meowing. Jenda was at my door. I'd cycled there and she never went for long walks ....
3) I feed a lot of strays in this area at night, but am always careful to feed them far away from my house. Yet everyone of them knows where I live.
4) After a death of a beloved pet cat, word gets out and strays move in on me to fill the vacancy ...
Just some examples; I'd like to hear your stories too, and why you think cats can do this!

Scent? Network communication? What is it that keeps them so informed?
Not talking about recognising sounds of cars and voices from miles away.
Thanks

My male quacker parrot is 1year and 7 months. He has always been very cuddly and loving towards me and has been anything but in the past month. I cannot get near him without him trying to rip chunks of flesh out of me. Because of this, he has recieved no affection from me. Knowing that birds are very social creatures, I'm very worried about this new and undesirable behavior. I do not want him to not be able to come out of his cage and participate with the family like he used to. Is he going through sexual maturity right now? If so, will this mean biting phase of his pass? How long should it go on? Please help!!! I miss the sweet bird I used to have. What should I do?

My mother has told me that she wants to buy a dog. We are both currently researching a breed that would fit best with her lifestyle, and I was wondering if anybody could help us.

Because of my mother's declining health, she will not be able to take care of a dog that needs to be walked more than once a day. We are looking for a dog that would be content just playing indoors or keeping her company. Also, I don't want a dog that is big enough to knock her over.

We were thinking about getting either a whippet or a boston terrier. Does anyone have any better suggestions? Thanks.

I am getting an 8 week male maltipoo. He is about 1.2 pounds. I want to train him to go inside because I live in an apartment and go to school (I dont work), therefore it will be easier to litterbox train him, any ideas about that? Is this not a good idea? The breeder told me to buy a toddler play pen and put his food and bed on one end and puppy pads on the other end of the play pen. How well do you think this will work in house training him. Later on, when he is older and bladder stronger I want to train him to go outside, but right now since is bladder is so small I know during the week I can not take him outdoor every hour or every two hours because I have class. So in the future I want him to go outside, but if I am not home be able to use the doggy litter. Do you think this is a reasonable expectation. When I get the puppy next week I will have a lot of free time to train him to the doggy litter, and the breeder has already been training him on puppy pads.

Thanks for all your replies so far - very helpful. I have spoken to my boyfriend about spraying him with catnip and he is keen to try it! It won't make Archie go for him though will it???
And just to clarify things to 2 of you - the boyfriend has a very good job and has the pleasure of being allowed to work from home most of the time!!!!
