What kind of food should dogs over a year eat? dry or canned? I have a golden retriever, he's about a year and 3 mos. my neighbor recommended that I eliminate canned food from his diet, he normally eats half a can of Pedigree choice cuts in the morning, mixed with 3 cups of dry pedigree complete nutrition, and the other half in the afternoon, and a milkbone in the evening. Is this a good healthy diet for my dog? He weighs about 65 lbs.

Thank you.

Yes.I feed my dogs dry food with canned dogfood 100% nutritionally complete is important. And they also get biscuits that help to clean the teeth. Home food can also be served such as rice with boiled boneless chicken,,liver or beef.Cooked veggies are ok too.Cool completely. You can also give your pet dog vitamins.

Your neighbor is absolutely right. Canned food is bad for dogs. Also, pedigree isn't a good brand. Look at the ingredients, there's a lot of bi-products. Anytime you see "meal" that is a bi product. I recommend Eukanuba dry for large breed dogs. Also, with Goldens they tend to have problems with their skin and fur being dry. Put one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil on the dry food per day or every other day. You'll see a huge difference in about a month, it's also very good for their cardiovascular system. My dog weighs about 75 pounds and she gets 2 mile walks daily and I give her two cups of food twice a day, 12 hours apart.

Treats and other things are fine. I let my dog, a German Shepherd, pick her own treats at the store. She loves it.

The things that I would worry about with feeding canned food is him getting overweight, and his teeth. Canned food is high in calories, and does not take much effort to chew. Some dogs get spoiled to canned food and refuse to eat the dry. Dry is less calories, and better for their teeth...the crunchiness helps keep tarter off (Groomed a dog that ate only soft dog food and soft treats...her teeth were green and her breath made me gag!). Use canned food for a treat, or in the winter to put a couple of extra lbs on him...not to many lbs, just enough to keep him warm. If he is an inside dog, don't put weight on him...your house is warm enough. Milk bones are a great treat for him to help with his teeth also.

After all this, my recommendation is dry food.

The best source of information for what is nutritionally best for your dog would be your vet. Pedigree is full of fillers and by-products, and not the best choice, but if he's satisfied and healthy, then that is what matters most.

If your dog tends to have allergies (not uncommon for a golden retriever), look for a better products, without corn, corn-meal or by-products.

Canned food is generally only recommended for pets who are super picky or recovering from an illness. Canned food is bad for an animal's teeth and digestion. I used to be a vet tech and I would never feed my pets canned food. Also, I personally think Hills Science Diet makes the BEST food for dogs, if you can afford it.

He should be on MAINLY a dry kibble diet. But some canned food is acceptable. I'd cut it down to 1/2 of a can daily, instead of a can a day.

We use 'Flint River Ranch' food. It comes in the mail and is 'home baked'. They have a variety of products. We use the dry food. Our dog is a 12 year old chihuahua/terrier and is in good health. He has a beautiful coat. Good luck.

There is mounting evidence that commercial dog foods are dangerous to your pet's health and shorten his life. Reading what is actually put into dog food may well make YOU sick. Google "dog food quality" or something similar to learn more. You'll end up cooking your own food for your dog!

Dry food is healthier for the dog overall, especially for the teeth. Canned foods promote tooth decay.
