Iguanas are strange in this sense. They don't feel pain like you and I do. For example: An iguana will lay on a heat rock until all of his intestines are cooked. which is a reason why heat rocks are not good for them. The reason iguanas do this is because they don't have any feeling in their bellies, they are designed to make big falls to escape from predators. Anyways, iguanas feel safer from up high where they can look over everything. This reduces stress. Maybe that's what he's trying to do. Good luck.

Owner of a 4 year old, 6 foot long, male green iguana.

My iguana broke leg and was x-ray by the vet. I used the flex straw and tape to keep the leg in place. I also turned the heat down to about 75 degrees and kept him in a large plastic box than his large cage for 4 weeks.
One lesson that I learned from the vet was the reflection of the x-ray was not very white from the bones, so it was not getting enough calcium. His diet was changed to include more green left items (do not feed iceberg lettuce! no food value ). Weak bones break.

You may need to look at his environment. If you have him in a glass aquarium, the glass and/or stones in the aquarium may be getting overheated. He could also just be reacting to feeling discomfort from his injury. In any case, you should try to find a way to make him more comfortable so that he doesn't aggravate the injury. Consult your local veterinarian for more advice. They may be able to help you rearrange his environment to keep him stable for a while until he heals completely.

That is just how igs are. They will want to climb up to the top of their cage to get to the UVB and heat lamps, and Igs naturally want to climb everything they possibly can. In the wild an injury could make them lunch for another animal, so they cannot let this stop them. Your ig will want to climb with his broken arm no matter what. This is why you need to make sure he cannot climb and break it worse.

He is not use to being handled. Any animal would try to run despite its injury.
