For example:
1) When I was at uni., a new student wanted a room in our communal house. Before he moved in, his Siamese cat moved in first, even though the cat hadn't been shown the house before.
2) I was moving house myself, 7 years ago. Not far. I led most of my cats to the new place before I moved in, but Persian Jenda never came. Then once the t.v. had been moved, I was watching a video alone and heard meowing. Jenda was at my door. I'd cycled there and she never went for long walks ....
3) I feed a lot of strays in this area at night, but am always careful to feed them far away from my house. Yet everyone of them knows where I live.
4) After a death of a beloved pet cat, word gets out and strays move in on me to fill the vacancy ...
Just some examples; I'd like to hear your stories too, and why you think cats can do this!

Scent? Network communication? What is it that keeps them so informed?
Not talking about recognising sounds of cars and voices from miles away.
Thanks

Cats have a Superior sense of hearing. (even better than dogs!) So when you tell them to come here or get down from there, they hear you clearly!
They are also masters at studying humans and their body language. They also have great sense of smell(and even use their tongue to taste the air) that they are suppose to use for hunting rodents.
Answers to your questions:
1) he could of followed him there and watched from a distance which cats do often.
2) she followed the other cat's scents to your new home.

3) they can smell you, and the possibly know where you live because they see you come out of your house and go back in.

4) hmm...well it could possibly be a coincidence or they picked up on your emotional stress and likeing you, decided to help perk you up. Or your cat was keeping them at bay(protecting territory) and when he/she wasn't there, they came over.

Silly!

1. The cat was exploring & went to the only room that was not suffused with anyone else' scent. Even more true if the potential roomie had been in the room at anytime before.

2. She obviously went for at least 1 long walk! Even if you cycled there she knows the scent of your bicycle. Cats know the scent of EVERYTHING in their homes, not just the humans.

3. When you feed the strays far away, do you walk or cycle there & back? You're leaving a scent trail.

4. Word does not "get out". Strays in the area will be able to tell, again by scent, that the resident feline is no longer there, so they're free to move in.

A cat's sense of smell is incredible. It shows them a whole world we can never be aware of. These aren't "secrets" at all!

I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your question - just more examples to support the question.
I have 5 cats - have had multiple cats for 20+ years. I adopted Noah from the Humane Society about 10 years ago. He has always "known" when I'm depressed or crying (not the boo-hoo type, the type when tears just roll down your cheeks). I will not have seen him for hours, and there he is, rubbing up against me, cuddling up by me quietly purring. He will stay for hours if I need him. My son even says Noah and I have a strange connection. I don't know what I will do without him when he goes over the rainbow bridge - I wonder who will be there for me then. I don't even want to think about it.

Well, cats were always associated ith magic. There may be something to it.

As for amazing cat abilities - my cat uis always the first to know when I send e-mail home. No matter where I am as soon as I sent e-mail my cats trots to the computer and starts meawing. Nobody wanted to believe my my parents when they told me about it so my mum recorded him once - I told my mum that I'll send her something when I come from uni that day so she knew she could expect that. At some point My kitty woke up, yawned and run to the PC whith a look of anticipation - and the computer wasn't even turned on at that time!

Kitties are smart little buggers - even when you think they're just lying their minding their own business - They are always watching and listening.
And they are so smart! I'm quite sure animals talk to one another - so since you are such a caring and loveable person - you are definitely part of the kitty paparazzi;) They are always watching you - even when you think there's no one there.

My cat is so smart - she get fed her supper every night at 6pm - and if I'm not in the kitchen opening her din din she makes sure to call me as loud as she can - complaining that I'm not there yet.

Aah, don't you just love 'em:)

cats are very smart animals, however, most people don't realize that. They think that dogs are smarter because you can teach a dog few things, cats are as smart, they just don't want to be bothered learning tricks. They are very independent, loving creatures. They find things by scent.

Actually cats know everything...they have life sussed out. They used to be worshipped as gods and have never forgotten that...and will never let their carers forget it, either!
