My friend really likes my newt, and wants one of his own, and I know that the general rule is to not buy ppl animals as pets, but I dunno...

Go with the general rule - no pets as gifts.

I agree, giving pets as gifts is a very very bad idea. Your friend might not know all there is to know about taking care of a newt, and he, or she, should at least do some research before deciding to get a newt of his, or her, own.

Pets as presents are a BAD idea.

What about getting a pet shop gift card for your friend? That way they can buy whatever they want for themselves, and if they decide a newt isn't for them, perhaps they can buy stuff for any other pets they may have...
