The problem is behavorial. A canine will not foul it's own nest. One way or another is will find a way to hide the evidence.
Do two things. Feed him as soon as you get home and then after about an hour take him for a walk or let him out in the back yard. Do not feed him during the day by leaving food out.
When the dog gets use to the routine he'll know what's expected of him.

Good Lord! Some of the answers on here. It is true it is natural and common. I was told by the vet that they do this because there is a nutrient they are missing in their food. I would suggest trying a different food and maybe a different time of eating if you feed them correctly they should have no need to "poop" during the day while you are gone, especially a small dog like that.

It's called Copraphagy!

Coproghagy ~ in technical terms it means stool / faeces eating, and as much as this is a horrible, horrible, habit, it is also a very common problem within our canine friends! Yuk!

If your dog is guilty of committing this crime, it is probably very likely that as well as his own, he will also consume faeces of other dogs, cats and other animals.

Unfortunately Coprophagy isn't well understood and not enough research has been done in this department by scientists. However, it is most often said to be linked with behavioural problems.

While I am unable to stop your dog from carrying out this foul act, I am able to tell you as much as I know regarding possibilities of why your dog does this.

I also have a few offerings of advice to try and help resolve the matter.

Reasons WHY!

It has been suggested that a dog may eat his faeces because in the past he has been told off for leaving mess in the kitchen, say for example.
Therefore the dog would get the idea that it is wrong to defecate and therefore eat his faeces to hide the evidence.

To eliminate yourself from being in this category, if your dog DOES happen to foul in the house during housetraining, be firm but fair. Don't goover board in telling him off.

This behaviour problem may stem from lack of dietary needs. Please check that your dog is getting the correct nutrients for his breed / age group.
If you are in any doubt, ask your local pet store or even vet. They are they to help you!

Could it be that dogs have picked this habit up from their mothers? It is known that a ***** will feed from her new-born’s stools. Not nice, but we are all known to pick up bad habits from our parents.

Some say that bored dogs, particularly those who are in kennels are prone to be coprophagic, or will easily become.
To ensure this isn't the case with your dog, make sure that your dog is exercised regularly, also make sure there is always plenty going on in his life.

This is a sign of either mental problems like stress because he is being forced to live in solitary confinement, or he has been punished for toileting in the house. They eat their sh1t to hide the evidence and avoid a smack or yelling at.
never EVER add table salt to its food unless you WANT to cause kidney damage. If you have time to sprinkle meat tenderiser on the turd, you have time to pick it up.

some dogs do it if they are not getting all the nutrition they need, try walking him several times a day so he won't need to poo in the house.
it's actually quite common for puppies to do it, its a digestion thing, but they normally grow out of it.

He is not a cat, should not have a litter tray and should be taken outdoors for a number 2 ! You should go home during the day to walk him.

I had a dog who used to do this, a friend told me she had a vitamin deficiency...do'nt know if this is true or not. Girl dogs tend to do it to "clean up" after their pups i've also been told. Sometimes if they do'nt know how you will react if they have done one in the wrong place, they will eat it so you do'nt find out.

Yes, ok. You need one of those dishes that you set a timer and it feeds the dog some food every so often. I assume your dog is starving when he decides to eat his turds. Or maybe he just likes the taste of shite.
