Because they are not well-bred. Just as it's easy to confuse poorly bred shih tzus with lhasa apsos. Serious breeders are guided by the standard and purpose of the breed.

Because they are closely related breeds for the same basic purpose - pulling sleds. The Siberian Husky is the smaller, lighter boned of the two, bred for pulling lighter sleds very quickly. The Alaskan Malamute is a larger, stockier, heavy boned breed for pulling heavy loads - a draft dog. Sometimes sled teams have a couple Malamutes near the sled to pull the brunt of the weight, while the Huskies are up front to set a faster pace.

There are also Alaskan Huskies - not an AKC recognized breed, but in reality used much more in sled dog events. They are not very handsome (like the other two breeds) but very functional.

actually, the husky probably looks like the malamute. I think that the designation husky dog means several of the sled type dogs in alaska and canada. Those dogs would all look similiar to be able to survive in those climates.

in some ways they do look the same. like there colors, face, and there fur. and they r different in ways also.. like malamutes wiegh 80-95 lbs and huskys wiegh 45-60 lbs, malamutes in hieght are 22-26 inches, and huskys are 21-23 1/2, the colors of a malamute are white, black and white, wolf gray, wolf sable, and red and for a husky the colors are black and white, light to dark, red and white, gray and white, which ranges from silver to wolf gray, sable and white (which is red orange with black tips), agouti and white(which is somtimes referred as the coyote color and contains alot of dark grey coat), and white. the life expectancy for both dogs is 12-15yrs. and one other thing is the husky can have 3 different colored eyes.

For a Malamute, picture a Siberian on steroids -- bigger, stockier, more muscular, usually shorter tempered. Their muzzles are heavier, their ears set further down the head, and their bones larger. All of these things are relative depending if you are looking at a small Malamute or a large Siberian.
