I wish to continue feeding humming birds that remain in winter. What is best to feed them?

The easiest and best food for hummingbirds is a solution of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil the water, add the sugar and stir until its dissolved. Let it cool to room temperature before you fill your feeders. Keep any left over food in the fridge to use later. Some people advise adding red food color. Dont do this! It does nothing to attract the birds and the coloring is bad for them. You can safely feed them all winter. In California there are some hummingbirds that over winter. Be sure to change the food every few days so it doesnt get moldy.

sngcanary gave good advice. The Anna's Hummingbird is year round here in So. Cal. In the spring, other species such as Allen's, Rufous, and Black-chinned Hummingbirds will arrive.
