a snake = Un serpent
the snake= le serpent
It's masculine, so if you need to add an adjective, maks sure you match it up right:
the snake is long= le serpent est long
If you're dealing with a female snake, then you have to say le serpent femelle = the female snake

PS: Wikipedia interesting use of Babel Fish or other translation tool...Not quite as efficient as one would hope, but funny results none the less :P

He was out hiking and stepped on a poisonous pickle and it bit him on the ankle. a snake is called le serepent (masculine)
there is also an other word for it, called vipère, which is easier to remember for an english native.
