I believe that christmas is basically based on a lot of paganism. For instance the day being based on the birth of the sun god (winter soltice) however, my family will be very upset if i don't come for christmas and celebrate with them. What should I do?

So I am 29 and gave up a nice job to help a friend start up his new company. Kind of a risk reward type of situation...the risk won. My folks want to send me money (1000 +). I am embarressed but grateful. What do I do with this (yeah rent, bills) but how do I tell them that I really appreciate this and am not asking for a hand out. I am really embarressed to get this money but I only have 65 bucks to my name- want to make it up to them. Please help me get an idea to make them feel like I am doing the right things in life even though I am dependant on this money. This is the first time I have ever needed this support.

I have become upset at the fact that the family I have does not feel like a family and I try my best to do things to make it feel like a real united and loving family but I have yet to see full success. So if you are the one to give me your best answer about what a family truly is then you will be rewarded. It may seem easy to give me the meaning of family if you get it from the dictionary but this answer has to come from you. remember its not a definition its what comes from within you. once i decide what the best answer is I will say what the meaning of family is and compare the other answers.

p.s the reward is best answer.

I am a full-time student. I have my school day arranged as if it were a work day (8-4). I also consider myself a homemaker. Finally, I have a business doing public speaking and consultation work. Most of the time, I struggle with my home which drives me crazy!! I want to do well at everything I do, but people are telling me that this is impossible. I don't believe it. Am I doing too much, or is this actually attainable?

It is an American tradition that when a couple marry they usually gravitate towards the woman's side of the family for most holidays and many other important events in their lives. I am the mother of two sons My youngest has just graduated college & was offered a job opportunity in NY, close to where his girlfriend's parents live in a very elite section of NJ, 3 states away from my home.Consequently, he & his girlfriend have moved in with her parents. I made it no secret in the past that one of my biggest fears is the aforementioned tradition primarily because I was adopted & my sons are the only two drips in my gene puddle that I know. My youngest has always aspired to affluence, predictable, as I am down to earth simple county folk & divorced early in their childhood - I have struggled & bore my son's embarrassment over the car I drove, et al. He is spending Thankgiving with her & not coming here until Xmas even tho he's LIVING with them & see them every day. M I the MNL from HELL?

I mean its not like I got to choose her for my mother..and believe me if only I had a choice! She acts as though every time I have a thought or feeling that differs from her own that I am doing her a great injustice and being ungrateful for the privilege of being her daughter. I have never been made to feel that I am allowed to have an opinion that differs from hers..and I am only just coming to grips with how that has screwed me up. We had a huge fight yesterday and I said that I thought we should stay away from each other for a while cause I was tired of upsetting her all the time. She said that was fine by her and that I could contact her "when you feel like talking to your mother"..like I'm the cause of our problems! I cant see a time when I ever will *want* to talk to her again. The only thing that will cause me to talk to her again is the feeling that I am duty bound to do so. But to do so is to disrespect my feelings and to make her appear like she is in the right. What to do?

My MIL and my husband have this pattern that goes on between them whenever they see each other. It will usually happen a couple days before the visit is about to come to an end. There is always a falling out (either between one of us and her, or both). More than likely, the problem will get blown extremely out of proportion and dramatic . She and Idon't have the best relationship because she is always critical of my homemaking skills (I am a full-time student), and how we raise our children. I have said several times that when I need her opinions or advice, I will ask for it. She does it anyway, for the past 5 years. In January, my husband leaves for 15 months to Afghanistan . This is also the time that my infant son will have a small oupatient surgical procedure. For some reason, she HAS to be there for the surgery. I don't want my last days with my husband to be ruined by her, because of fighting and her comments. What should I do? I really don't feel like dealing with her

I tell my older sister everything about what's going on in my life and stuff but she's so private about what goes on in her life. We're really close and we can talk about anything. I don't understand why she keeps it from me. I feel hurt sometimes because she'll rather confide in my friends than me. Is it just an older sibling thing?

My partner and her family are concerned that their mother is in danger for her sanity and her life at the hands of their step father. She has been admitted to hospital twice in 12 month, I think for overdosing, and after a few weeks of their care is sent back home. He will not allow the family to see her without causing a fuss and the strain is now telling. When the Social Services are informed they say that unless the mother raises the alarm there is nothing the family can do???? If a child is under threat is this the same reaction????Does anyone have the answer????

ME and her father are still together and I have more than enough money to take care of her. DO you think we should tie the knot? We love each other, We are both from rich families and Our parents are kewl with it. Tell me what to do.

my sister and I are both 14 and we are identical twins! I hate it so much because she loves being a twin so much she tries to do everything the same as me like putting her hair the same, doing the same sports as me, wearing the same makeup, same clothes style, ect. I am getting fed up with it because I want to be my own person and she doesn't feel the same way. What are some ways I can change that I know she either won't want to change or CAN'T change? I tried changing my clothes style and hair but I like my hair and clothes. We both have the blonde hair prep style. i dyed my hair brown but hated it so now what should I do?

My brother has been getting hit awhile by my grandfather, who lives with my grandbrother now, and my grandmother. I live along with my mother so Im not there all the time. I think my brother's been getting hit by my grandfather and he told me once "I hate getting hit by gramps, he's so grumpy". I didn't know what that meant but now I think hes getting abused, should I tell my grandmother with the proof or try and talk to him?

Reccently my husband lost temper with his grandson who is 16. He hit him several times. We talked, and he said he was sorry and would not let additude get in the way of judgement again.

For the past while it hasn't been a problem, or so I thought. Today, my granddaughter - who is not living with us - approached me with the concern that my husband was hitting my 16-year-old-grandson.

I asked her why he didn't say anything, and she replied, "Cause when Dad lived with us, Dad hit him all the time and nothing was ever done 'till I told you."

Then here's the real kicker - he was reading today and my husband took the book and hit him in the eye with it!

I can't go to his mother, his father's in prison. I'm not sure what to do, any advice?

My fiance's family lives about 4 hours away. He hasn't seen them in 3 months. My family lives 7 hours away and I haven't seen them in almost 3 years. He wants to go up there - but his family has done nothing but argue these past few months. All of his siblings are snobby towards me - like they think they're better. When we got engaged, they didn't even say 'congrats.' And they always talk about me behind my back - this has been acknowledged. No one is even offering us a place to stay - out of 4 houses. I kinda don't want to go, but I know it's his family and he loves them. I also love my family, too. I just...don't know what to do. I don't want to tell him because I don't want to hurt his feelings...but I think he knows how I feel about them. He's never even met my family...and this will be our first thanksgiving together. Oh yeah - He wasn't even going to invite me up there in the first place. If I don't go, I'll be alone. If I do, I'll be miserable for the whole week. What to do?
