How is your relationship with them now (specify your age)? I'm 19 and my mother (who is alcoholic) is doing a lot of work in therapy and hasn't been drinking for a little while (maybe a month or so). She was sober for a few years in the past, but then relapsed. She is now trying really hard, and knowing that she is really making an effort has helped our relationship mend a little, but it is really hard to deal with loving and hating someone so much at the same time. I have also been in therapy about this, which has helped. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone successfully had a good relationship with a parent whose alcoholism caused them a lot of emotional trouble as they were growing up. And, how did you get past constantly worrying about them relapsing again?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Okay this is what happened:
Yesterday i came home after school and my mom told me to make a salad for dinner. i say ok and go to my room! she leaves for work and then my dad comes home and eats dinner with out a salad (because i forgot)!
Today my mom asks me "so did you make a salad?" i say no i forgot! then she starts yelling at me and then she grounds me for three weeks from the phone and my straightener! what i don't understand is why did she get so angry? i made a small mistake and now im grounded for three weeks i think that's a little unfair!

so if anyone out there understands why parents do these things...please help me! cuz i'm ready to explode!

My policy with not only my MIL but other annoying people is mostly ignore or show my displeasure once in a while. However, with MIL, I just cannot stand her anymore. I need to find small ways to deal with her:
1. She is on advice overdrive. Could do this - could do that, think about this, think about that, buy this, don't buy that.
2. She is constantly sending e-mails on "what my husband used to do when a child" - I am really tired of listening / getting e-mails about my husband's childhood.
3. Has mean snide comments abt my parents/brother
4. MIL lives in a different country, but visit us for few months every year - and they try to take over the house.

What have people done in similar situations? Its impossible to have a "talk" with her because she has a comeback for everything. Plus, she is Mean & Manipulative - her biggest weakness is that she Lies though her teeth. Did I mention she is a hyper lady? and that I am a laidback person.

All thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks

I am running out of excuses at work to say why I always have black eyes, bruises, sick days and the like. My cat is out of control with the drinking. When she adds catnip it gets much worse. I want to call the police, but I love her and don't want to see her in jail eating no name kibble. HELP!!

My daughter has progressively gotten worse with talking back, lying, sneaking out of the house, being somewhere she's not supposed to be, and dating boys we do not aprove of and do not allow. A couple of weeks ago the s**t hit the fan at my house. She was grounded and wanted to go to a friends house. After hours of back and forth saying no, I told her to get away from me. she kept on and this got my husband involved. He tried to give her a spanking for the awful way she was talking to me and it turned into a heated yelling fight. my husband said he couldn't take anymore, nor could I or her brother. She really was running the house with her selfish, unappreciated, hateful attitude. Her real father lives in Fla. and for 12 years he has not been involved in either of the kids lives. He had been calling for a couple of months and I was honest with her behavior, and he would say I'll talk to her. She now lives with him two states away, does anything, and has no rules. I'm worried. what to do?

He has been jailed for an offense against his own children. I often wonder if he abused me as a baby because he is old enough to be my father.
He and his latest wife and daughter are coming to town for a visit. Everyone will meet at my house to see my other brother who is visiting too. I really am afraid I will not be very pleasant to him. I don't know if this new wife knows he is a pedophile. It is like he keeps getting married to these women and having babies. Just to have little victims.

My one month son's father signed a declaration of paternity in the hospital when he was born. We live in different houses and the child resides ONLY with me. I have been trying to work things out with the father but I can no longer tolerate his emotional abuse. He had a huge anger episode last night over the phone and I have refused his phone calls. Now he is sending me messages telling me he is going to call the cops on me for "refusing" to let him see his son..and that I am "abducting" his child!! I am scared and unsure what he means. I do not want him in the house..it is just me, my mother, my daughter, and my son. I am alarmed he is going to do something drastic. I have been toying with calling the cops all day but am afraid to piss him off further..any advice would be most appreciated..especially in terms of him telling me he has half the custody! We NEVER agreed on any form of him having custody at all. Please help..thanks.

a member of SO's family suffered mental breakdowns, and was hospitalized after an unsuccessful suicide attempt. liver transplant and many therapies later, the member is back home with the family.

i was in shock when i heard the news from my SO. from my past experiences with SO's parents, i felt that family environment was largely to blame for the breakdown.

i come from a different set of values than those followed by SO's parents; my SO shares none of the values/perspectives held by them.

here's the problem: the SO has asked me to initiate contact with the family member who attempted suicide, to encourage and to be a friend. i want to encourage and be a friend, but i'm also very nervous about what to say. after all, the family member was institutionalized for months post transplant.
Now, my SO says that my perspective (nervous about the situation) is not acceptable and has declared that she will be leaving unless i take action.

what to do? thanx for advice.

i lost my dad only a year ago (my grandma's son!) we were absolutly devastated. i have not recovered from the trauma yet, my grandmother is 86 and she raised me with my father. i love her to death. she is stubborn sometimes and hard to deal with but just thinking of her dying, is killing me! that feeling i had when i got to my fathers hospitol room 2 minuets after he passed away i fell to the ground, screaming and crying histericaly. i am getting more and more dpressed because my only parent left is leaving me soon- how in the world do you prepare yourself or get rid of all the guilt of things that i have done that i cant take back. i dont know how to deal with this pain of the loss of my father and soon my g-ma. she did get to meet her 4 great-grandboys. my father only met 3 of his grandboys and my last baby i named after him as he was concieved after his death. i just need some words of inspiration...thank you so much!!!
