I am going to be buying a new desk top computer. Obviously, I'll do dual core.

I do a lot of number crunching and haven't been able to determine if I'd be better off with a gaming computer or a media center computer. Does the choice make a difference to number cunching (statistical analysis, simulations, data mining)?

I'm not a novice to computing, but way short of being an expert like I know some of you are. I'd like some opinions and I'd love to hear your reasoning, too. And if you have specific suggestions as to what I should I should make a priority, it would be great to have that too.

I was just using it normally, and then all of a sudden, the computer just shuts off with a click noise, when i opened up the casing, it smelled a bit like a burning fire and the power supply was kinda hot. Do you think it's safe to turn back on the computer and will it screw up any other hardware in the computer?

My motherboard only has one IDE slot on it and I need to run a hard drive and 2 CD drives. Where can I find an IDE cable with four "plugs"? I need one plug for the motherboard end and 3 for the one hard drive and two CD drives.

hi .i feel my cpu is slow with h/t becouse even though it is a 3.06ghz cpu it only runs at 1.6ghz in system info.would i be better of with no h/t or a 2.8ghz p4 no h/t becouse i dont tink you can get 3.06ghz socket 478 without h/t

i am looking for a 3.06ghz pentium 4 533mhz fsb 512 kb l2 cache socket 478 without h/t i have looked for ages and can only find 3.06ghz with h/t. the reason i ask is becouse i have this cpu with h/t in my pc,but my pc only runs at 1.6ghz ! i feel that maybe my pc is actually slower with h/t becouse not many programs recognise h/t and i feel my pc just chuggs allong at 1.6ghz. maybe i should just get a 2.8ghz p4 without h/t as i am sure you can get them please help. thanx

hey i was wondering if my computer supports pci graphic cards??
cos when i opened up my comp its got 4 card lots, agp1,pci1,pci2,pci3 and pci4.. pci3 is used by the card i got with the comp

and my comp says its got 256mb DDR SDRAM.. will a 512mb DDR-266 work with my comp?

Alrighty, this started 2-3 weeks ago. But recently, my computer will "hang, lock up, freeze". Not exactly a crash, but lock up. Happens when Im playing games, browsing a webpage, anything flash related, and on a few anti-virus programs. Im not sure if its hardware or software. Games for for awhile, somethings randomly work or freeze. Any ideas?

My specs.

2.93Ghz Intell Celeron
Two 512mb 400mhz RAM sticks ( only one in right now )
Geforce FX 5200.
30 Gig Hard drive ( I know its small )

Any other info just ask.

Whats I've tried:

Replacing Ram
Using 1 stick of ram.
Switched Hard Drives.
Updated/Checked Drivers
Changed/Took out D/:
Took off case siding for air circulation.
Checked Connectors/Cables
Looked over Power Supply

And thats about all.

Any help guys/girls?

Ok i am working on 2 different computers. One of them the PCI slots arent working i put my vid card in and the fan spins and i have tried it on a diff comp ad it worked? and the other one it asks me if i want to load windo normally or safe mode or last known good configuration and i make my choice and it nver loads. So then i put a diff hard drive in an old one and it loads indows right up so i put my other hard drive in anothr computer loads windos fine any clue guys?

I want to upgrade cpu and mobo but dont want to shell out for new memory. Want a dual core cpu but wondering if the new boards can use my PC2700 DDR 2 gigs of memory. The Intel DG965RYCK Intel Socket 775 uses Dual Channel 240-pin DDR2 with a total capacity of up to 4GB. You can install DDR 533/667MHz memory it says. So can I use my old ram sticks with this? im starting to save up money and found out some ppl give electronics life span..life span as in how long they last before you need to replace it. once i got an ipod the life span on it is was 1 year and 1 year 2 months later my ipods hard drive crashed..so can someone please tell me what would last longer and what is a better choice to get if all im going to use it for is about 3 thousand songs..like would a laptop still work ok if it had 3 thousand songs in it..? or would a home computer be better...i also need help with wat the price tag on the computer should be..like i dont want to pay 2000 dollars for a computer thats features i wont be using..but i dont want a 400 dollar computer and it crashing after 2 seconds of use.so now that you understand what i mean by the price tag of it..around what should the price tag be and if you could help a little further what company i should buy it from. i was thinking dell but is it anything like apple..with their cool but malfunctioning ipods
