Right click on the background of your screen, choose "properties". Then select the "Settings" tab at the top, and then "Advanced" towards the bottom.
A new screen pops up... select the "Adapter" tab and it will show you the Brand, chip type, and the amount of memory it has.
As for what brand to recommend, unless you are doing high end CAD drawing, I think the ATI brand is good. Even better is NVIDIA.

Most likely, your system uses an on-board video card, and the best way to determine your video card is to check your motherboard specs if your system supports AGP or PCI-E.
For AGP, NVidia works best, however if your system uses PCI-E, ATI rocks.
