does a laptop or a home computer have a longer life span?

im starting to save up money and found out some ppl give electronics life span..life span as in how long they last before you need to replace it. once i got an ipod the life span on it is was 1 year and 1 year 2 months later my ipods hard drive crashed..so can someone please tell me what would last longer and what is a better choice to get if all im going to use it for is about 3 thousand songs..like would a laptop still work ok if it had 3 thousand songs in it..? or would a home computer be better...i also need help with wat the price tag on the computer should be..like i dont want to pay 2000 dollars for a computer thats features i wont be using..but i dont want a 400 dollar computer and it crashing after 2 seconds of use.so now that you understand what i mean by the price tag of it..around what should the price tag be and if you could help a little further what company i should buy it from. i was thinking dell but is it anything like apple..with their cool but malfunctioning ipods

The life of the computer is directly related to the care you put into it. Here is the best "plan" you can run to keep either a desktop or laptop running for a long time.

1. Get a good anti-virus software and run it often. Most users can run a weekly check and daily updates.

2. Get a good anti-spy-ware software and run it often. Again, a own per week scan is sufficient for most users.

3. Use a firewall. They do keep certain issues above in check, and protect against unwanted intrusions.

4. Be careful on the Internet. The above solutions will not work if purposely download applications that do harm. Read the user agreements and watch for other "bundled" applications that come with wanted software.

Depends on what your needs are. The crux on laptops used to be that you were trading power for portability. Today, that's not really the case anymore. However, since cost is a factor in your decision and portability isn't, I would consider a desktop. Desktops tend to be cheaper per computer real estate. Nowadays, you get a get a Dell for under $1000 that will be powerful enough for you to enjoy itunes or whatever music downloading software you use. As far as hard drive space, you'll usually find bigger hard drives installed onto desktops and you can always add more internally or externally, where as a laptop, you're probably limited to adding hard drive space externally, sort of swapping out your old one.

Your question about which type of computer would "last longer"...well look at it this way, if you get a desktop, parts are interchangable, meaning if one fails, you can replace it without having to replace the whole thing. On the other hand, there are not too many parts on a laptop that are interchangeable and it's a lot more tricky to do it.

As far as a good (but not phenomenal) you can expect to pay between $600-$1000 for a computer that I believe will suit your needs. Also with a desktop, you can recycle older parts (i.e. monitors, keyboard, mouse, speakers) to keep costs down.

home desktops generally have a longer life span on them, but obviously have less portability. for doing nothing more than playing music on my suggestion would be to go to someplace like walmart and spend about 600 on a compaq in the box set that will be internet ready and usually come with a monitor and some limited upgradability so that you could expand the harddrive later to add more onto. they are usually very reliable and cheap alternatives to something like a dell or Apple.

Desktop usually have a longer lifespan. They get better airflow, and so are less likely to overheat and ear out. They are more upgradable, so you can extended their usefullness. Also, you are less likely to drop a desktop - number one case of failure in laptop computers.
