I was just using it normally, and then all of a sudden, the computer just shuts off with a click noise, when i opened up the casing, it smelled a bit like a burning fire and the power supply was kinda hot. Do you think it's safe to turn back on the computer and will it screw up any other hardware in the computer?

You might want to take it in and have the power supply checked out. A failing power supply could fry your motherboard or hard drive.

Chances are your computer overheated & shut down. Depending on your system it might have thermal protection.

I doubt you would do any damage turning it back on. If it totally fails to come on, no fans or anything you can probably bet the power supply is toast. Remove it and see how much wattage it supported. Get a new power supply one notch larger then your current one.

I have somebody at my work with the same problem. It is either the power supply or the motherbaord. I would check the power supply first.

in truth you can try but there is always that risk. it could be that there is a short. but personally i would look to see if there was anything burnt. just smell and look for any burnt marks. as far as turning it on eventually some one will even iff you take it to a repair shop. so might as well do it yourself.

Sounds like you blew a chip. Remove the hardware, and look for the burnt part.
