Is it necessary to purchase a third party disk optimizer to optimize a hard drive on a Mac? I have a g4 desktop with 2/800 processors, i gb ram. I know that the Mac doesn't come with a disk tool, so I never thought it was necessary. When I install a new program or update, I get a message saying "optimizing hard drive" or something like that, so I assumed it cleaned up the hard drive automatically. Is this correct? If not, is there a freeware solution? I've had the computer since the g4's first came out, and it doesn't seem excessively slow like a windows machine would be. I reformatted when I installed panther (or whatever the last upgrade was), but that was a while ago. Thanks in advance.

I have (2) 256 MB DDR2 Memory Sticks ,but my computer says i only have 447 memory. Before i had erased my hard-drive it said i had 512 but now it seems to have dropped. I used a program called FreeRamXP Pro to defrag my memory, which i used before i erased my hard-drive. Please assist me or ask me for more info if i am not clear enough.

My friend has gave me her computer to try and mend and I am stuck!!

It is XP home (genuine) and when you turn the computer on it starts to boot ok, but as the XP Home sign comes up the little green "line" goes across for a few seconds and then the computer just re-boots, back to same point and does the same again.

She had lost her install disc, although the genuine sticker is on the PC case.

I imagine I need to get a "recovery" disc, can I download one for free anywhere off my own computer?

I do not want to risk making her copy "non-genuine"

All help greatly appreciated

I've been trying to defrag my computer but it won't ever finish. It just stays at 0% during the process. Am I doing something wrong? Here's how I start defragmentation:
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter
Are these the correct steps to do defrag on my computer? I have a Compaq Presario.

Is this as easy as buying the new keyboard and just plugging it in? Or would there be more involved? Also, do I need a special adapter or anything?

Thank you so much!

Here's what I have now...

Pentium 4 2.5Ghz
512MB ram
Nvidia Geforce Force FX 5200 w/128mb
120gb hard drive
Windows ME (yeah I know it's old)

Should I upgrade to Win XP and in a year or so upgrade my computer (bigger hd, more ram & new video card) or should I just skip XP and go straight to Vista and hope for the best?

I don't have the money to upgrade my hardware just yet but I really don't want to buy XP only to find out it's more outdated than I think.

Hi Please suggest.

I want to purchase Dual core 2.8 but again confused as there are two Options. Is there any significance difference between these two.
2.8 Ghz (LGA 775)/800/1X2/820
2.8 Ghz (LGA 775)/800/2X2/915

motherbard Intel DG965RY

RAM 512MB + 512MB 400 MZ.

As I heard because of speed mismatch among three devices , we can not get complete benifits.

Is 400mhz RAM speed is enough for Processor / Motherboard ?
