Please Read this link, It will Surprise you.

200 Ways to Recover data from a HDD.
http://www.hddrecovery.com.au/downloads/200ways.pdf

The "Safest" way to 'Totally Destroy' ( make Non Recoverable) is to 'Disassemble the HDD, Take the 'Wafers' our and 'Shred' them 'Several Times' till there is 'only Dust '.

Most of the 'Other Parts' will retain 'No usable Information'.

Also keep 'Hazard Disposal Info' in mind, Many places have restrictions on 'Waste Disposal'.

Instead of just "destroy a desktop computer', Consider 'Stripping all the data' , Reformat it, install a different Operating System in it and 'Donate It' to a Youth Organization. I believe it would be appreciated and the 'Recipient's' could 'Reformat' it to there needs.

Good Luck. daveo5624

This is good question. Destroying things is actually not that easy to achieve. Let's say you want to make your desktop unusable but without too much effort.
You could smash it to pieces, but this may be tough: the cabinets tend to be either metal or hard plastic. You could also open it and remove the hard drive and smash it (again not so easy: you need tools to open the box and unscrew components). That would still leave the PC usable - just install a new drive.
You could also remove the motherboard, or pop out the CPU. Again: needs tools, not so easy.
Maybe the best and easiest is to take it to one of those places that recycle electronics. You won't need to worry about hurting yourself trying to break the thing, and the components will be at least partly recycled.
Still, you may want to make sure you do not leave any data lying aroung on your drive. If so, you should do a low-level formatting of your hard drive (which you can only do if booting from your installation CD)

The problem with your question is the use of the word "best".

The most effective way to destroy a computer is to smash or grind it to bits, then expose it to very high heat to melt the bits.

However, I prefer the second interpretation of "best", meaning "most entertaining". I have seen computers dropped off high buildings, dragged behind moving vehicles, placed in a log splitter, and, my personal favorite, crushed with a steamroller.

I have not yet seen a computer's demise brought about by use of high explosive, but I am hoping.

If your just worried about the stuff that's on the hard drive just take that out and beat the snot out of it with a sledge hammer or bring it to a salvage yard and have them run it through a shredder.
