Here's what I have now...

Pentium 4 2.5Ghz
512MB ram
Nvidia Geforce Force FX 5200 w/128mb
120gb hard drive
Windows ME (yeah I know it's old)

Should I upgrade to Win XP and in a year or so upgrade my computer (bigger hd, more ram & new video card) or should I just skip XP and go straight to Vista and hope for the best?

I don't have the money to upgrade my hardware just yet but I really don't want to buy XP only to find out it's more outdated than I think.

This is a computer I built myself a few years ago and I had future upgrades in mind when I built it.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO VISTA!!!!!!!!

XP is pretty stable and will be a lot faster than Vista with those specs. Plus, XP is STILL the most used OS (around 85% of computer users have XP according to PC World's latest article). If you go with Vista, the most you'll be able to do is upgrade to the Home Edition of Vista which is CRAP and doesn't feature the cool stuff that Vista's Pro editions have. Also, Vista may be out, but there are a lot of incompatible drivers at the moment and some of your hardware may have problems. Unless Vista is already installed on a new system, I've heard of nothing but headaches from people who have upgraded.

PLEASE do yourself a favor and avoid Vista for now. XP is your best bet and has several years before it becomes "outdated."

I don't know how you survived with ME for this long. ME is supposedly the worst Microsoft OS to date. Poor thing!

No seriously
Xp is still much better than Vista, I was shocked when I has to evaluate and test Vista. It was slow, none of my music and games work on the system and the amount of errors, crashes, bugs and compatibility errors I had drove me crazy.

I highly recommend you save money and time by staying with xp, it will be good for the next 4 years or so. Also if you have a problem this section is perfect for getting help with xp.

I think it was an article in PC Mag or PC World, I forget, but the conclusion is this: If you have dual core CPU get Vista otherwise stay with XP.

I personally would just save the money you are going to spend on the OS, sell you computer on Carigslist, then buy a new computer with Vista and a Core 2 Duo CPU.

Your setup there would run XP just fine, not to sure about vista though, you might want to check on microsofts website for recommended hardware requirements, seems to me you might be a bit low on the memory side of things. Also remember there are four different versions of vista that require different levels of hardware. Microsoft will be supporting XP for a while yet so it wouldn't be a bad way to go either.

Stay away from Vista until they get the bugs out. I've had no problem with
Windows XP. I would think twice about Vista. It's expensive to install and if it
doesn't work right? Well, you just threw your hard earned money away. I get
CNN emails every day. They were saying that as soon as Vista was released,
the hackers got busy. Personally, I think it was released way too soon. Good
luck whatever you choose to do.

You should upgrade to XP, I think. It'll still work fine, but just a teeny bit slower than Win2000. In a year you should go upgrade your hardware to 2GB RAM, at least 256MB graphics, your processor is okay but I'd suggest go get a dual core processor, get some 200 GB HD and yea that's what you need to get the best experience of Vista.

Buy a Unit that can allow a Cheaper alternative in harder, but as you get cash, will also allow you to put in more Memory and a Larger Hard Drive, that way you can plan ahead.
Pick Something you like, but make sure it has extra capabilities, but not the super package. i.e. the Memory Slots for more, as well as Hard Drive and Card capacity that allows for easy upgrades
